MC30 & speaker hiss

No hum or hiss due to Bill doing a rebuild on them... now they just need some rustoleum on the outside.. :)

Ospho, if I was considering any treatment, but that would destroy the historical "patina" of it`s 60+ years exposure to Miami`s salt enriched atmosphere, after all it`s just unimportant, (at least to me) "unsightly" mild outside surface rust, and not affecting it`s electrical properties.
Their just Mac 30`s tube amplifiers, and no photo shoot is planned for a stupid audio rag, or website..

Great. I envy experts like you who can rebuild like this...

I`m not sure I`d be qualified as an "expert"(seasoned maybe !), just driven to max out performance, within reason, my close friend`s, and my own stereo equipment for best sound possible, & for them be very reliable too..

I tend to be lazy and rather listen to music than work on audio equipment, as I did that for 40+ years, had to do something with my life.o_O

Wow, rich experience.
In your opinion, how much does it cost to repair the hum & hiss of MC30 at the shop, including labor? Just estimate. I'm thinking of it now.

Hi
One quick question, if I may:
In your opinion, how much does it cost to repair the hum & hiss of MC30 at the shop, including labor? Just estimate. I'm thinking of it now.

I can`t really answer that accurately cspyon, as I was informed when self employed from 1987~2002, that I was charging way below the market rate for my electronic repair services, being that I was already being paid a generous for life income tax free annuity from a successful medical malpractice lawsuit, I was not interested in chasing the almighty dollar, just doing the best job I could.

I know, but just estimate if you replace the parts that cause the hum & hiss...

I`m sorry cspyon, but I`m so for removed from the current reality pricing of good rework of any electronic repair, that any figures of cost would be far from accurate from me.
I loaded up on common repair parts almost two decades ago, and with labor rates, along with part pricing/shipping have somewhat recently sky rocketed, and stock pile them for my own personal equipment repair use..(selfish maybe?)

Any close friends who decide to utilize my services, are given a repair parts list to purchase, after I have used my substituted tubes/passive parts to determine the proper repair, and they then acquire them, via their time and effort/cost..

The "system" is not what it used to be, and my friends will either accept the repair costs(my labor is free, or they do it under my guidance), or not, after all it`s their equipment.

I have a butt load of SS & tube audio equipment in my house, including a dining room full of reworked by me,vintage tube guitar amplifiers/guitars.
It`s just the way it is, here.
Good luck Sir.

Well understood. Thanks. I am going to take it to the tech shop anyway.

I totally agree with you..! I think that the nicks, gouges, rust, etc. all adds character to these vintage amplifiers (I was just kidding about the rustoleum.. didn't think of ospho)… :)

Hi
Can I swap 3A slo-blow fuse with 3.2A for MC30?

Hi
Can I swap 3A slo-blow fuse with 3.2A for MC30?

It`s never a good idea to up any manufactures fuse value, used in any electrical/electronic device, and by doing so, and a fault happens, there may be more damage to the equipment, and if the replacement fuse rating is excessive, a fire could happen.

Why would you wish to replace a common rating fuse(3 amp slo-blow )with an odd ball(3.2 amp) value fuse of a slightly higher rating?

The cost of technical labor just like the cost of living varies so greatly across the states, as well as the world, trying to quote restoration pricing is dubious at best, a estimate of labor time is more relevant.

On top of that the available exotic nature of certain parts, therefore pricing, coupled with the "favorite" type of parts that many restorers like to use will also create huge variables in restored pricing.

Best education to prepare you for the conversations you should have with potential restore techs can be found within these forums, just search out your model number.

Oh, actually I just found the fuse of the MC30 with hum was 3.2 A (the previous owner put it there), so I was going to replace it with 3A anyway. Thanks for your kind reply!

Got it. Thanks!

.

I`d rather have rustic/ruff looking amplifiers that kick ass, than "show case" museum class looking paper weights, since their purpose is to amplify, as accurately as possibly music..

My rustic circa late fifties MC 30 Mac tube amps have their DNA of their coastal FL. life saline atmospheric environment ..

I know how you feel. This MC2105 sounds incredible. It was my bass amp, a PA amp, a studio monitor amp and now sits in my living room with a complete rebuild.

Good quality parts for a complete mc30 rebuild run $250-$350 each. I’ve done it 4 times and the improvement in performance and sound quality is tremendous.

As has been mentioned by others, the original parts are long past their life expectancy. If you want to be precious about their originality, don’t use them.
