McIntosh 1900 Receiver Noisy on startup

So I have had this receiver for a long time, serial number 9x256 and it just started being noisy through the speakers on startup. Then it goes away and it sounds normal until you turn it off again. So I guess my question is this a power supply problem or possibly a cap problem? Downloaded a service manual for it, hope I got the right one for the serial number, as there are a few of them. Or is it something else I should be aware of.

They are darn heavy so getting it downstairs to a workbench is not going to be fun, so I was hoping somebody could point me in the right direction, because I know that some of it is card based and I would much better take something out if I can get away with that. Doing a search didn’t seem to find me anything, but maybe I wrote it wrong. Took it out of service for now, hope you folks might have had this issue and can point me in the right direction. Being almost 75, arthritic, etc, any help would be appreciated.

Dirty switches can also cause this issue. Have you attempted cleaning them?

If getting a crackling noise through the speakers that eventually begins to clear up, it's usually an indication that one or more capacitors are beginning to fail. Best bet is to ship it out to Audio Classics.

Yeah, thanks for that response. I had a chance awhile back to trade it and I could have got $730 for it, but would have needed to purchase something much more expensive. The damn thing is heavy to move around too. Just got done doing a Bill D upgrade on a Carver C-1 preamp. It never seems to stop.

I would try cleaning the switch first. Sometimes the sound is an arcing from carbon on the switch.

McIntosh had the heavy amplifier market cornered for a loooong time.

MAC1900 is 33 lbs which puts in the lightweight category as far as Mc. At 40 lbs, the MAC1500 is deceiving for its size but to be expected due to its tube amp section.
