McIntosh 2205 meter repair

I am contemplating picking up a nice 2205 amplifier for my son, nice cosmetic condition from a trusted source but non working meters. The lights work but the meters don’t move. Any ideas how costly a repair of the meters might be?

I bought a 2255 with one non-working meter. Mine is deflected about 1/5 to 1/4 off from the zero point, when powered on or off. So I was told something is definitely wrong with the meter. If yours are not working but at zero scale, then maybe it could be something in the meter drive board?

It just seems a little strange to have both meters not working, so if you're lucky, maybe the meters are good and the meter board just needs to be rebuilt.

But to answer your original question, I'm going to send mine into a place in CA that specializes in meter (all kinds) repair. They charge $37.50 to diagnose and give you an estimate for repair and their labor rate is $75/hr charged in 30min increments. So I'm hoping it'll be no more than ~$100 to get it running again, but we'll see.

The first thing I would do is to exercise the meter range switch ... dirty contacts is incredibly common with amps of this age.

Thanks for all the great comments and direction, my son and I have decided it may be worth throwing money at buying a nicer, upgrade Amp to the MC2205. We have already found some potentials so fingers crossed we will make a good choice. Also, I did find the old threads about the 2205s which was really great info. Cheers guys!

Try cycling the switches and see if that gets them to work. Not uncommon for oxidation to make them go intermittent. If that's the case, the cure is to pop off the backs and clean the post terminals on the meters.

It is difficult to believe that both contacts and both meters are bad

I agree but my son and I have moved on. Found a nice 240 to buy and no meter issues LOL!

So my son ended up with a Crown PA 400 and found some ESS AMT 1B speakers, had them reconed and together with a preamp his brother gave him, he’s rocking a pretty nice stereo...good to see young blood appreciating vintage stereo...

I remember trouble with MC2205 used with AMT1B
Because of high efficiency of the Air motion Transformers Tweeters , the MC2205 is making noise (like the wind in Winter ) coming from speakers ....
