The C28 was $525. It was in really good condition, although one corner of the wood case was dented/chipped.

I hope I didn't pass up a screaming deal...

They go for around $700 in the feebay.
What about the 2300 amp?
Did you get anything other?

The amp was gone. I saw they were just throwing the price tags in the trash, so I decided I wasn't going to dig through there to find out how much it was.

Well, another good deal will come to me I guess.

I see.
Hopefully it was not that crowded since it was little bit on the hill. :scratch2:

Not too bad. I should also say that I got there at 12, not 10. Just walked in and check things out. I'd never been to an estate sale before.

I was there at 7:30 and missed the amp by a few seconds. Although the guy that got it was there at 3:30 AM. It was a 3Y, had the power cord and rails. Was mint minus a few white, wall type, paint drips on the front that probably would have come right off. All that for $575. I have been saving up for a 2nd Mac system and this would have been the cornerstone. Oh well, there are better Mac amps anyways. Even though I am a huge deadhead and this was what Jerry Garcia played through on stage. I expect to see it on ebay shortly, and may still be worth it for local pickup. I passed on the C28, I haven't heard much good about those.

The 28 is an excellent preamp. I bought mine new and used it until 2011 when I downsized. Only preamps I liked better were the Marantz 7 &7t, Van Alstine SpuperPas3X, ARC SP-3a1, Philips Lab Series, Mattes and the SAE MKI. Over the decades, I've had a lot of preamps pass through the house and while many excelled in some spec I did not find them as well balanced overall.

Good to know. I have seen them get a bad rap for volume and ground issues.

The volume control is an issue but available. But, many units the old have control problems and replacements are not available. Mine had no problems except at the very low setting where most stereo pots don't track closely. I just adjusted the topside attenuator so at normal listening levels the control was at about the 1:00 position where control tracking is usually spot on.

I've not heard of ground issues. I did have mine serviced with a few caps replaced, replaced the jackset with golds and the tech rerouted some of the wiring to bring down the background residual noise. Total cost was extremely reasonable. The tech was local who had worked in the service department for years of the then local Mc dealer.

Ive done 5am for an estate sale before... got my Stromberg-Carlson console at that one. But, 3:30am is a bit too early for me!

Wow! 3:30 am for a 10 am opening?
Even you are way too early for me at 7:30am.
The thing I don't like about getting there early is this.
I was in an estate sale few months ago and had a line on a Pioneer amp but even though I was there early, I couldn't find where the amp was. So I went room by room quickly just to see another guy who was few persons after me got to it first. :tears:

How can they price same for C28 and 2300 amp?
The amp goes for much more. :scratch2:

It's already up on ebay. Smoke coming out when turned on. Most likely a relatively easy fix, but I am glad I did not end up with it. That is the risk at estate sales. No try before you buy, at least on the first morning.

Wowzers.

Yes, when I was there I just felt uncomfortable and rushed. I would rather take my time, find something from a trusted person on Audiokarma and have a stress free transaction. To me, that's worth a few extra bucks.

Even if the 2300 needs work, there was plenty of room before coming close to the going price of a 2300.

If they were for sale locally, I'd have broken my vow to downsize and at least bought the 2300.
