McIntosh C11 RIAA Compensator Switch

On the C11 and the C22, the default position for the Compensator switch is set to RIAA. The manual states "This control corrects for program equalization introduced by the recording process." I understand that prior to 1954 LP's were not produced using this curve so the switch is helpful with potential sonic problems that these recordings might have. My question is, when would you set the switch to LP instead of RIAA? If all LP's made post 1954 have the curve in them isn't it overkill to keep the switch engaged?

There were several playback curves, RIAA being standardized in the US in 1955. Leave it on RIAA, unless you’re playing a record with a different playback curve.

I suppose, being a 60 year old preamp, you would move the switch to LP if you were playing 78's or something.
