McIntosh C26 upgrade advise

Hi everyone,

I am owning a C26 which is non-stop producing hiss on both channels (independent on the position of the volume knob).
A technician is willing to help me out and get it solved... so went to his place where we hooked it up on measuring equipment.
Finally his advice was to replace the electrolytic caps as well as the transistors (as some got radio phonic) and having the pots cleaned (ultrasonic).
However, it was not entirely clear to him which transistors initially got used and which modern ones can be used to get them replaced.

So, I have been numbering the different transistors in a pic so one can easily refer to it. Please let me know if you want me to send the pic.

Also:

-Are the other parts still the original ones? (and again, best replace with...)
-The front panel is not evenly illuminated. There are three light bulbs inside that seem to work fine.
Any idea on how to get this corrected?

First off, Welcome to AK.....

Some suggestions:

Search function is your friend. There are current C26 threads, as well as older C28 threads that will answer your questions and give you ideas.

Either purchase a schematic from Mac parts or download one from the Akdatabase.org. If you type in a Mac transistor part number you will get many posts informing you of the new modern replacements.

Yes I have restored and repaired a countless number of these units over the last 40 years......I have some ideas that have been successful and many failures. Even though I can see some of these units in my sleep I participate here to gain new ideas and knowledge.

So here is my question, what do you and your tech propose to do? These forums should be a two way street. Too many come here for a quick answer and never participate again. I don't learn much from a one time Charlie...not much two way communication there.

I would send it to Terry Dewick and "do it right". Audio Classics can bail you ought, too. I took a C-26 to a Marantz clinic one year and it more than equaled their new 7T, at the time. I also found one of my input caps on one of my 275's was bad.
