McIntosh illumination filters?

Hello.

I need some McIntosh help, please? The blue filters around the meter illumination lamps have deteriorated on my MR78 tuner. Is there a replacement for the filter material (that I can use to make my own filters). McIntosh does not sell these filters any more. I would hope to be as original as possible.

Also, I need the red filter material for the dial pointer.

Thank you and I really appreciate some help.

Or you can swap out to blue LEDs and eliminate the worry altogether while reducing heat and providing a much more vibrant blue in the process. Bulb life is far longer as well.

Available on the auction site.

Right then, where you get those from? I'd like to go that way, my Tuner is on while I am away, I like to leave the radio on so there's some sort of noise coming from the house so it sounds like someone is home.....So my bulb life is probably nearing that time......

Kevin...eBay item number: 272474013028

Good luck!

Hi 62caddy, I have recently recapped an earlier-version MR78 of mine but was not able to re-do the blue filter tubes properly for the two meters, and the festoon lamps are getting tired. I went to the auction seller's website as you have suggested and they have quite a different colors to choose from.

From your two pictures, your MR78 "blue" color is beautiful and it looks just about the right Mac color, so my question is did you order all the LEDs in "blue", or some "blue/warmth white combination"? I meant for all 5 of the 1866 panel lights, 2 of the 1847 meter lights and 2 of the 058-032 festoons. Aside from the MR78 illuminations, my vintage C22 and MR71 will definitely be benefit with newer lights as well, but I think the panel on these two should be warmth white rather than blue. Has anyone else had actual experience of the LEDs for these models with pictures?

Ah...clarification question - I suppose these LEDs draw less current than the originals, is that a safe assumption? Anyone care to chime in?

Many thanks!

The festoon lamps were standard incandescent. Not certain of the lamps used behind the tuning & SS meters as these were already installed when I got the tuner.

That LEDs draw less power is almost a certainty.

I would definitely recommend checking with the seller(s) regarding the appropriateness of LED substitution in he panel as the correct "light temperature" is critical for the proper panel illumination as you have pointed out. There should be no worry with the dial lamp replacement however.

Well, I bought the above LED light kit.
The good.....they provide 8 bulb, but you only need 5.

The $%^^%$ bad.....the long main faceplate bulbs are about 3/16" LONGER and because of the square ends will have to be soldered in place. PIA

Well, I now know why they send 8 LEDs, because two in my package were DOA, Interesting how when i check with a DMM a good one will glow on the ohm setting, but one is totally dead, and the other one has a reading on the meter.

As long as the 5 work, I still have a spare. Hopefully the 5 have a long life!

OH, yeah. Those 1847 for the tuning meter and signal strength meters are not technically in this LED package, they may be able to be used, but won't know in my case because I only have one left, but....

I do need to replace both because one is out, and as long as I have this much apart, but, wow, do you see where those guys are?? I can see another hour or two just getting those changed out. Why stop now!

I'm hoping to pick up a couple 1847 bulbs at the Auto Parts Store today!

Broke down and ordered a few blue leds for the 1847 meter bulbs, reason being is I've read where the blue/green diffusers will fall apart once I get them and the old bulbs out. I did pick up a pair of 1847 bulbs at Radio Shack for $3, I'll keep them in the shop.

To continue re my comments about soldering the new led festoon style lamps, I have a few messages back and forth with the seller, in particular is a comment..."
Strange, never received such remarks. I sold many of these and nobody had to solder anything!
I guess we gamble with ebay and sometimes do ok, other times hold our shorts. I managed to solder the square end lamps into reformed copper clips, let's hope the lamps have the proposed life they say!!

The MR78 is finished, I made the kit mentioned above work, but I had to order some soft blue LEDs for the two meters, which otherwise take a 1847 bulb. The pics show the meters as being very bright, but they are not, For some reason i cannot take a pic without their jumping 20170205_160119_resized.jpg 20170205_155840_resized.jpg out at you!
