Hello all,
I inherited a bunch of gear and am trying to figure out what to pair with what and which speakers to repair. I know next to nothing about vintage stereo stuff, but I listen to lots of music. The three McIntosh amps I have are all in good working condition (as far as I can tell, but I probably am going to have them serviced):
MAC 1700

MAC 1900
(the balance knob does not work properly, but otherwise good)
MA 6100
The speakers I have to choose from are:
- Large Advents ("The Advent Loudspeaker") - seem to work fine, but bass seems weak
- Baby Advents (Advent/3) - two pairs, though one needs at least reconing and maybe more work
- KLH Model 33
- Fisher XP60-C
- JBL 4312A - needs reconing
- Totem Acoustic Dreamcatcher Monitor - random newer speaker that might work with this vintage gear?
The rooms I am setting up in are:
- Largish living room + open plan kitchen (approx 300 sq feet). This is where I will be listening most.
- Office (120 sq feet) were most of the rest of my listening occurs.
- Basement room (approx 150 sq feet) where I listen to music fairly rarely. Mostly TV.
- Bedroom (140 sq feet)
I have two other vintage amps but am not sure if I should use them for anything:
- Harmon Kardon 330B
- Dynaco Stereo 80
All my music right now is in an iTunes library (everything ripped as lossless to FLAC and converted to ALAC) that I connect to the amps via airport express. But eventually I will probably get a DAC and run wires. Sometime a ways down the road I may also attach a CD player and turntable, but not for quite a while.
Which speakers would folks suggest I pair with which amps and for which rooms? Or should I sell some of this and get other speakers entirely?
Any advice would be appreciated!
