Mcintosh Kit

I was wondering if there would be any interest in Mcintosh selling kits to build your own amp. or FM tuner ? It would make a fun and satisfying project to actually build your own Mcintosh. I know in decades past this was an option. Maybe if there was enough interest they might offer it again. Just wondering what others on this great forum, think. I do not know how to set up the thread so people can vote . A little help obe one toymaster, :DMasterlu. David

I think that would be cool. I doubt it would be a big seller though. I don't think the average McIntosh customer is big on do it yourself projects.

Did you see that they are making new Dynakit amps again? Just do a web search on dynakitparts and you will get to them. I think it would be fun to play music on a system you built yourself. I have given this some serious thought but I just don't have the room where I'm living right now. :sigh:

I can see it now, the DIY 2K Kit, buy now & have it built by next Summer.

Seriously though, I like the idea; although I don't think D&M would.

I would think a good tuner would be much more difficult to build than a good amp. Plus you need more specialized test equipment to do a tuner alignment.

I do remember building a tuner kit for a crystal radio when I was a kid. It was a fun kit to build but it sounded terrible.

I remember building a Realistic transistor radio kit. It had several parts but I still feel it was too simple. Instruction was pretty clear that I had to adjust a few caps and transformers. Works pretty well. I been wanting to build an entire home stereo kit but to no avail so I ended up duplicating amplifiers (65watts) off on of my stereo. Works well. :D

I believe the reason McIntosh stopped production of DIY (MacKit 30 amps) wa due to the fact that it took additional staff to answer questions and the price difference between factory/DIY just didn't make economic sense.

Tuner kits that would measure up to Mcintosh standards would be very difficult to build properly IMHO and doubt that they would ever do it. Amps are much easier but again, that is not their game but was done originally to meet what their competitors were doing at that point in time.

Good thought but probably not going to happen.

I like the idea as long as the quality of audio reproduction is as good as the products they sell now.

These new kit amps are physically exactly like the originals...too much, in fact. I ran across some website where they had kits based on the original Dynacos but without the power sockets on the side, better input jacks, and modern binding post output terminals. I think it was off of one of the AK sponsored sites if I'm not mistaken. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I think these other kits were more expensive...I'll keep looking. For $650 these without tubes ain't bad. Probably be getting one myself one way or the other.

That is pretty funny, though true. I do not think building a tuner would be so difficult. I am also a ham operator and I have built lots of radio's.

I would really like to see some of the classic amps brought out as kits. I am thinking of the MC30s or maybe even a 275.

As much as I would like to see something like that, I can't figure out why McIntosh would want to do it?

Some of us don't remember how to hold a soldering iron. I can see it now on the news - "Man burns down home trying to assemble audio amplifier" :yikes:

Would need " Assembler's insurance endorsement" from Chubb. :D

The MACKIT 30s cost more to make than a finished MC30. If you want kits just buy and old model and rebuild it.

thanks,

The last kit I built was a 5 tube superheterodyne AM radio in 1965.

Everybody is good at something.

I prefer to have my Mc built by someone who knows precisely what they are doing. I passed on removing my appendix and reducing a compound fracture of my right femur as well...

Yep.. I've been thinking about buying a pair of the MK III kits...
