McIntosh MC-40 Mono Amp Question

A friend of mine is selling two McIntosh MC-40 mono amps for $500 a piece. They are in great working condition, and sound awesome hooked up to my Pro-Ject III turntable. My question is, is $500 a piece worth it? I'm new to the world of McIntosh but from what I can gather it seems like a great deal.

look at it this way, do you think you could spend 1K for a new amp that is better than a pair of mc40s? I doubt it. If they are in good working condition, buy them. These are classics and ones i good condition sell for far more that this

Very true. I seriously doubt I could find a new amp with this great of sound for less than $1,000. What preamp do you recommend for around $500 that would pair well with the MC-40s?

I have a Conrad Johnson PV-10A preamp that I use with my MC40s. And $500 is about the going price for a nice example. I have absolutely no complaints, nor desire to upgrade.

I can affirm that this combination has truly incredible sound. :music:
 
I decided to buy them. Doing some research around the net $500 a piece is a good price even though they have been modified slightly(the volume nob and the input plug are switched for whatever reason and some of the chrome is missing), but they sound great, no hums or static. Even though there isn't any humming or static I'm still going to send them to Terry at McIntosh Audio for refurbishing since the only thing new about them are the tubes. Does anyone know what Terry charges for a complete overhaul?

Congrats!:banana: I'm just a few days into MC75 ownership and I'm enjoying them immensely. Not only do they sound superb, they are a joy to look at.:yes:
