McIntosh MC2205 - Finding a Preamp

what about tube pre amps? will a tube pre amp give me a tube sound even though the power amp is solid state?

Look at an MX130. Built-in tuner, lots of inputs, MM phono input, low distortion and remote. I also have a C33 which is also very nice but it will be the first to go because it does not have a remote. The MX118 is sort of a stripped down MX130 but it has very few inputs and no phono, (same tuner). Once you get used to wireless remote, you will never want to go back.

Depends on the amp, but the preamp can definitely alter the overall SQ of the result.
I generally try to find an amp that sounds "right" directly from a source thru a pot before I mess around with a preamp to establish a baseline. A hard harsh sounding power amp will still sound hard and harsh, as will a dull lifeless amp sound dull and lifeless, regardless of the rest of the setup.
