McIntosh MCD7007 needs belts, but what else?

Hi All,

I got a good deal on a MCD7007 CD player that needs a little love. The drawer won’t open easily. I took the cover off. When I ‘help’ the drawer by gently pushing it from the back, it opens all the way. I’m able to load a disc. When I attempt to close it, again, it needs a little ‘help’ to close all the way. Once the drawer is all the way in, the disc is recognized and seems to spin fine. I plugged it into my amp and both channels seem clear, but it’s late and I can’t blast it right now. I’ll check it better for sound tomorrow.

so I’m thinking it could probably use some new belts and a good cleaning of the drawer mechanism. What used to be grease seems to be crust now. Where can I get new belts? Are there standard belts that will work? I didn’t see parts on McIntosh’s site. I could just send a message to the I suppose.

while I’ve got it open, I’d like to replace the bulbs with LEDs. The current bulbs seem quite dull. I like that bright green to match my other McIntosh gear.

are there any caps or transistors that I should consider swapping while I’m in there? Any upgrades that any of you recommend to these units?

As I recall there's a youtube video on fixing this very problem, either on the MCD7005 or 7007, can't remember which.

Found it

It pertains to the MCD7005, not sure what if any the difference is on the transport mechanism between the 7005 and 7007.
 
Yes, I also just found it... it's the MCD7005. and I also don't know what the difference will be. I'm pretty handy, so using his video, I'll see what I can do. He really didn't discuss how he was able to obtain a new gear for the one that was stripped however. I mean, I'm sure someone is 3D printing them. Once I begin disassembly, I'll have a better idea of what I'll need to replace vs. what I can keep. I'm sure the track and gears are quite dirty after so many years. Some inside items have surface rust too.
 
Yeah, that critical part just kind of magically appeared....
 
Here is another thing you should check first. I had the same problem with my MCD7005. While I had the cover off inspecting everything, I noticed on the inside of the cover on the top, a piece of foam. My foam was becoming un-glued and had fallen about 1/16" and was interfearing with the opening of the drawer.Check it first.

Yes, I did see a thread that mentioned this problem. Perhaps it was yours. I was hoping my issue was something like that, but it's not. The insulation is tight to the lid and the door is still problematic with the cover off.

but MAN, DOES IT SOUND GOOD ONCE THE CD IS LOADED.. WOW!
 
To close the thread on this…. I did get new belts from McIntosh, cleaned everything and relubricated. Now it functions perfectly
 
It sounds like teeth grinding. Like the gears are stripped. Anyone know where to get new gears?

please don't say 3d printing. I don't have one of those.
 
Well as the crow outside the window says, "ca-ca."

I can't figure if my 7007 has the same mechanics as the 7005.

Seems to be, the upgrades were in the electronics, and the mechanics should be the same.

However, any part listed mechanically says 7000-7005.

Anyone?
 
Wow ! I guess I can consider myself extremely lucky, FWIW !
My 1986 purchased brand new MCD-7007 CD player still functions perfectly, with only my optional re-lamping it with LEDs about 7 yrs. ago.
Though it is no longer my primary CD player, it remains installed in my living room`s master A/V signal source rack, and is powered up every time I finish burning a CD copy of a purchased digital music file for checking the Red Book compatibility of the burn for archival purposes, and the only thing that`s noticed about its function, is the tray is a little slower opening/closing.

That player was my only home CD player for well over 23 yrs. until I bought a Sony CD/SACD/ DVD player in 2009(I had to give up LPs in late Nov. 1981) with thousands of operational hrs under its belt, I`m thinking that its pricey new purchase turned out to be well worth it for all those trouble free yrs. and its analog output sounded damn good too.
