McIntosh MR-74 won't stay tuned in!

Hi, I have had my McIntosh MR-74 tuner for a few years, and it does sound great. For stations in the middle of the dial, the signal will stay strong for the most part, occasionally drifting out and back in. For stations on the edges of the dial, it is harder to tune in initially, and it goes out of tuning often, and it is harder to relocate the station to tune back in. Is this an alignment issue, or something electronic? Thanks for your help.

The symptoms could point to a tuning capacitor contact problem. If you want to try DIY-ing, there is a "sticky" topic in this forum entitled "How to clean a tuner (analog)".

Good luck,

Thanks Chazix, for the sticky reference. I will try this some weekend and get back with results. Might be awhile before I get to it, but to others who have this problem, the sticky is full of great instructions and info.

Fortunately the MR 74's tunung cap is easily accessible and there's ROOM unlike some receivers and such. I just did mine using the stickey, CRC non-residue contact cleaner and the faderlube spray, Q-tips and a lot of patience.
The process worked wonders I'm happy to report!
