McIntosh MVP831 Firmware Updates

I have a McIntosh MVP831. I has a great sound and I'm very happy with the picture quality as well. The problem is that is only plays CD and DVD. I would really hate to have to upgrade to a MVP861 to be able to play the newer formats.

Are there any software/firmware mods available that will allow an MVP831 to play CD-RW, DVD-A, or SACD? :scratch2:

I also own an MC402, C2200 and MR85, and I love my Mac gear.

Any assistance wourld be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Ron,

Thank you for the fast response. Would you recommend upgrading to the MVP861? There do seem to be a number of folks complaining about the motor noice, especially when playing CDs that aren't round or flat. The reviews look very good.

Thank you.

Hugh? The MVP861 is very quiet. Go listen to one at a dealer and you will see, a, hear it is quiet. Now the MLD7020 LV player with an out of balance LV disk is somthing to listen to!

Thanks,

Ron,

I may just go ahead and purchase the 861. From other posts, I gather it uses a Denon transport. Is this true?

Firmware upgrade for MVP861

Hi Ron,

Is ther any firmware upgrade for MVP861? If yes where can I get it from and what are the fixes if any.

Thanks in advance.

Ray

There are no firmware updates on the 861. Any transport that spins CDs at four times read will be noisy if the disk is stamped off center as it will be out of balance and the read laser servos will go into overdrive to keep focused.
If you take a CD that is like this and burn it onto your computer then make a CDR you will notice the CDR is noise free as the information on the disk is now concentric.
This effect is even noisier on the MS300 / MS750 as it spins the disk very fast to copy it to the HD in about 4 minutes. Even though it sounds bad the MS will copy the data correctly 99.9% of the time on out of round/balanced disks.

Thanks,

I've never noticed disc noise on my 861.

Only a defective disk will make some noise. There seems to be quite a few sloppily made disks now days.

If you can swing it bypass the 861 and get the 871. Seems like everyone loves the newer unit better.
