McIntosh MX-118 any good?

I have the 6100 integrated amp and looking for a tuner but see little info on the 118, was it a decent tuner?

In the past I had the mr73 and was not impressed with it at all. Yes it was in the shop but being in Chicago with all the building over the years reception has gotten pretty bad.

What about the preamp section any comments? I really do not need a preamp but in the future I could nuse it on something else?

Back to the 118 I see it has a remote, I suspect you can control the volume e that?

I believe the MX118 and MX130 use the same tuner module as the MR7083. The specs are identical and they were sold in the same time period. They have a four gang varactor front end. I own an MX130 and the tuner is decent however I live in a very poor reception area. In an area like mine, even MR78 owners need an outdoor antenna.

With the proper remote, you can adjust the volume, change inputs, scan the FM dial and store at least eight stations in memory. I use both an HR033 and HR034 and they both work fine. There are some functions for HT that might be useful to you as well. You would only have five inputs, I believe, so some of the keys would do nothing.

Two other points. First, if you want to go cheap, buy a Pyle 999 phono preamp from Amazon. connect to one of the inputs and hide it in the back. I use one for testing turntables and it works fine for me. Second, I bought an MR73 new in 1970 and used it for seven years on the NW side of Chicago (Fullerton and Central) and had no problem. I owned it for about 25 years before buying something fancier.

Thanks for the info..

Basically Im just looking for a reasonably priced undet $1k McIntosh tuner to go with my 6100. I saw the mx118 that has a remote which would of been nice.

The one I saw locally was.missing the oem $$ remote and some other mod I would have to undo but again overpriced.

So I will just keep a eye out or post a wanted ad here.

Like s mentioned I did have the MR73 in the past,(about 10 years ago) although great physical and operation condition it had a hard time getting many stations in my area.

Since reception in my area has gotten worse due to all the new buildings and I even think air traffic.

I did have it in to my local shop to have checked over and still the sane issue.

On the other hand I had a Fisher 200 tube tuner that put it to shame just using indoor rabbit ears.

Another reason when I say reasonably priced I really only listen to one classical station here. Eveything else I stream from my my phone or tablet.
