McIntosh shipped with walnut case

Yes, I read Larry’s well written article about how to properly ship, and I’ve also seen so many stories about people not realizing the glass is not supposed to support weight, and if the glass front is not suspended, it will at best crack.

Everyone always says don’t ship your Mac pieces inside the walnut case, I have to ask why? To me it seems if the panlocs were locked, wouldn’t the case provide adequate protection?

For preamp's and tuners the feet fit into holes in a bottom pad that is at least 1 inch thick of layered corrugated cardboard, then the top plate which is 3 or 4 layers of corrugated cardboard where the panlocs ship hold the unit in place when taped up tight.

Amps are bolted to a plywood plate under the lower pad.

Then this whole assembly is put inside the outer box.

The panlocs will allow the unit to move around side to side and put pressure on the glass frame. Shipping in a wood case is a bad bet......might payoff once but most often will fail.
 
here's a true story. My very first McIntosh piece, a C28. I won it for $628 on the bay. Guy shipped in in the wooden cabinet, the one with slanted wooden legs. It arrived without a crack and it wasnt even in a McIntosh shipping box. It arrived fine. then while carrying the box I tripped, the box flew out of my hands and rolled on the carpet. Glass still wasn't broken when I opened it.

I do not recommend you ship it with the cabinet on it, I was just lucky.
 
The L-shaped brackets on the cabinet that receive the Panloc brackets are attached to the chipboard with very small wood screws. They are fine for what they do on a shelf, but they tear out easily if the Mc unit is shipped in the Panlocs. Then the unit is free to bounce around inside the cabinet - ruining both.

Somewhere around here, is a photo of @kevzep 's MC2205 - shipped to him in the walnut cabinet. Destroyed. The cabinet was kindling and the amp required hundreds of dollars in cosmetic repairs. I'd of written it off personally.

You would be wise to look at the mechanics of a McIntosh shipping carton.
 
Wooden cabinet just doesn’t hold the equipment well and event lightweight component will get damaged
Couple years ago seller shipped me a MPI4 inside a cabinet and it arrived with broken glass.
It’s just not designed for that.
 
Yep, do not ship in the cabinet, do not ship in anything but a McIntosh or Audio classics proper shipping carton.
This amp was very nearly a complete write off...

That's inexcusable. I can only hope that the seller was made financially responsible for his stupidity.

What is the gear being shipped? Usually, there is a separate box for the walnut case and panlocs. Removing the glass is also a good idea to wrap. Good luck, hope its a good piece!
 
The panlocs always came with the equipment not the cabinets....if you buy a used unit the panlocs should come with it to be complete.

The cabinet should only have the mentioned little L brackets.

There is a place in the inner box top folded plate to store/ship the panlocs.
