Mcintosh System for Sale Need HELP

Hello im a newbie to AK and to the whole vintage scene. But have been around audio long enough to know the quality of Mcintosh. My question is this how much would you guys expect to pay for a Mcintosh MC 2105, a C 28 preamp, and a MR 73 tuner?? I want to know if i getting a fair deal. Thanks for your help as i dont know anyone that knows anything about Mcintosh.

It all depends on the conditon of said gear. If everything is mint with original boxes/manuals and has been gone over by a certified Mc technician then it could fetch around $3k for the lot, maybe more. If things are on the opposite end of the spectrum then $1200 for the lot might be more like it. If you check out completed auctions on eBay for these pieces it will give you a good idea of the range.
 
Look at current prices at Dewick Repairs and AudioClassic banners at the bottom of this page and you can get a good idea. Plus you know who to see for any needed repairs or updates!

This should be posted in dollars and sense.

That said, in perfect shape, with wood cabinets with all being recently tuned, aligned, recapped. etc.

MC2105: 750.00
MR73: 450.00
C28: 450.00

If no cabinets and unrestored, subtract 150-200 from each.
 
Condition is everything.

Wood cabinets?

Have any of the units been "clinic'd" or serviced?

Any mods to the tuner?

A little more info is necessary to even suggest a price range IMO.
 
They are all mint. The guy that owned them was really anal, he was the original owner. All have wood cabinets no bubbles in chrome or glass, no scratches dings or dents. All were checked out at a shop and serviced. I offered 2300.00 wich is about 500.00 less than the person in charge of the estate is asking for them. Still think that might be high??
 
If you can get any of the pieces at prices mentioned by dnewma04 I would jump all over them as I have not seen any at that price after a complete re-cap and tuneup.
 
When I mentioned recap, I was referring to the sort that get everything back into spec. Not a total recap.

... except that those two are going to be higher than ebay in general, but for good reason. On ebay there's almost always risk involved in terms of getting what you think you're getting, condition-wise. DeWick and AC guarantee that you get everything you paid for... no surprises, and if there is a surprise they work with you to get it resolved ASAP.
 
This is just my opinion, but unless all 3 components have some sort of written documentation from a "Mac authorized" service center from the last couple of years declaring that they all meet or exceed factory specs, they are as original and probably need updating to perform within spec.

You'll find the term "mint" to be rather meaningless on this forum, and it'll even deter some of the more knowledgeable folks from posting as they find the term a bit offensive when used to describe 20+ year old gear with hundreds of hours of runtime on it.

At any rate, yes, IMO, 2300 is well over the top for those pieces. They could be obtained from a dealer with a limited warranty and their specs/performance guaranteed for that money or less. As a buyer i'd probably be offering in the 1200-1500 range for the three units as a package, maybe a little more since the cabinets are there, add a couple hundred if the original shipping cartons and all manuals/paperwork are included. For me to get to an 1800 offer, they'd have to be "as new".

Just my .02 y'all understand....................

beans, you are right. Kind of like buying a used car from an individual or a reputable dealer. On the one hand you may get a better price, on the other you know exactly what you're getting. If any of the items need repair or adjustment we may be talking about very little differance in price in the end. (And our sponsers get some "joy" now also). :music:

Overall I guess I should feel lucky. I got an MR78 tuner on ebay for $650 but I knew it was risky even at that price. Sure enough when I got it, the packing was inferior and the unit had issues. (NOT ebay's fault, of course). But it had not been damaged in shipping, LUCKILY, so for the price it was a pretty good deal. AND it turns out the unit is a very late model, which for an MR78 is good.
I also bought an MC752 amp on ebay and was very pleased with the deal.
From Audio Classics I had them ship me a C504 preamp, which was in beautiful shape.
The point of all this is: with AC you always get value, and with ebay there's risk but if you watch out you can find really good deals especially in auctions.
 
No problem bowtie, this is the thread with the $ information of the offer to discuss. It also discusses the condition of the units. maybe the mods will merge the threads.
 
The price is a bit high, but not way out in space, or anything. A search on that other site yields those 3 pieces for ~$1750 or so; add shipping to that, and that fact that I'd never buy heavy electronics with glass faces to be shipped to me, and you aren't so far off in the price department. Try what bowtie said, and start around $1500, move up accordingly if you have to. It'll be a nice little rig, and you don't have to worry about all the faceplates being smashed if it's local. If they are packed well, especially in their original cartons, I don't see why not. Every Mc unit was shipped from the factory warehouse when brand new, so why not once more?
When I got my tuner, I had never been through this so I didn't think to make sure how it would be packed. It turns out they jammed this full-sized McIntosh into some Pioneer BPC receiver box and secured it with broken pieces of styro foam... luckily, no breakage.

From the factory, no problem, from eBay, no way -- your story is a perfect example of why. I'd pay more to be able to pick one up locally, and avoid any shipping (costs and potential damage/hassles), but that's just me. :)
 
Thanks guys for all your input this site rocks! thanks AK and everybody on here! So if i did end up buying these and they work but just need a major tune up. How much would that cost at a repair shop typically??

I meant only if you feel assured that it will be shipped in the same exact original containers... far from my experience. Sorry for not making that clear.
