McIntosh XJ5000 Air Suspension DIY Flexi Rack

Were you having problems with sonic feedback or your records skipping due to foot falls before the inner tube suspension? How did you trough out the wood that houses the inner tube?

Yes I was having some serious foot fall issues before, I tried several different isolation ideas , built a sandbox, tried some inner tubes, all kinds of feet/spike combinations, the only thing that really worked for me was the inner tube, basically on the inner tube platform version 1.0 I had an inner tube sandwiched between two pieces of wood with the TT on top, worked great. so with building this rack I wanted the tubes to be integrated into the rack design itself. as far as the cut outs for the tube , I took a piece of 3/8 plywood , cut to size then cut out the holes where the inner tube would sit, then glued it to the top of the shelf ( which is two pieces of 3/4 birch glued together). then rounded the corners off and did all the sanding as one piece. I think it worked out pretty good

thanks for all the complements guys! I really am NO wood worker so this was quite a challenge for me. this has been a very rewarding experience and I suggest anyone thinking of tackling a project like this to go for it! with a little time and patience and lots of thought and planning anyone could build something like this

So after building one, anything you would do different next time?

great question Britt! first i would cut the plywood myself, I had home depot cut it this time and it was a nightmare, the man cutting the wood at home depot obviously had no place using any kind of saw. even after careful explanation he just couldn't grasp the concept that if you plan out your cuts you can use the maximum amount of material with the least amount of waste.

I would also make sure to get hole saws for the holes. I used the paddle type drill bit and they really tore up the wood. I wont make that mistake again.

I really like the idea of cutting the slots in the back of the holes I drilled for the wires, that is genius

make sure to prime the wood first, I just started painting them, no primer. a total bonehead move on my part

other then that I don't think I would do anything different

That's a gorgeous rack...congrats!

That's also a gorgeous Transcriptors Hydraulic Reference. What is the arm you have mounted?

it has an sme 3009 with the silicone damping trough. I recently got this turntable for free in south africa. I am still in the process of having it converted to 120v from 220v for use in the U.S. , I cant wait to get it up and running!

thinking of adding wheels on the bottom of this rack so I can get to the back of it a little easier, anyone done this? anyone see any problems with this idea? thanks for all your input

I think you should put a heavy duty piano hinge on one corner mount it to the wall, a motor or attenuator with a remote so it swings out at the push of a button, very Austin Powers! Groovy!! :scratch2:  :smoke:

I'm on it britt! where do you think you could buy motorized rock walls? think lowes has those?:smoke:

Isn't it a bit of a PITA to add air to the tubes when they deflate? (all inner tubes deflate over time. I would have drilled a hole under each shelf near the rear and stuck the fill valve through so it would be accessible to add (or deflate if over filled).

I will be building something similar, so it's nice to see thegreat pics. I'll probably go with 3/4" or 7/8" all thread to make it as stiff as possible. Some type of cross bracing in the rear, too. I like the slotted holes, idea for cable routing. The best part is the custom dimensioning and how it displays the gear.
