Hi
Got a quick question, been thinking of adding either of these to the LR, which would you choose ? I think at the prices they're going for, I'd have to have one or the other, not both...
Wow - not a single comparison...

More than likely less than a few Aker's have heard the McIntosh otherwise there might have been more of a response. Let us know what you think...you may not feel compelled to get the AR9's.

You have a selection of two very nice speakers! I have owned the AR9 and can speaker highly of the sound. I recapped and refinished the set I had. I also had the woofers rebuilt as the voice coils had sagged out of spec. Once rebuilt this was an outstanding speaker system, a true classic among enthusiast. Placement can be a bit fickle but when set up right is very good. You should use the AR9 with a minimum of 200 wpc, high current amp to get the best from them. Bi-amping is even better! They are quite an articulate and comanding speaker. Very enjoyable.

I looked into the Mac you also listed and read the lengthy engineers paper on them. They too look quite advanced with shorting rings used on the woofers, custom made drivers and complex networks. I would bet they do sound quite good as well. The one disturbing thing I saw was the low soinc output of only 84 db w/m! The AR9 was at least 90db as I recall. Bang for the buck the AR would play considerably louder for a given input! If the sound would be equal then the efficientcy would surely sway me here!

I have listen to many Mac XR series speakers and always found them very enjoyable, as I have many models of the AR series. Good luck with you choice and let your ears be your guide.

dc270 - what engineers paper do you speak of ?

I'm not sure I see the real advantage (besides specs) in the efficiency rating...so, I just turn it up a little more right ? Am I missing something ?

re the AR9's...they or the Cornwall's may be the next prisoner I take hostage :)

It is not exactly an engineers paper but their engineer summerize of the speaker.

You will be turning it up more than a little with 6db of differance!
The Cornie are fine speakers as well VERY efficient too!! If you have not listened to horn sound you might want to be sure you can listen to it for a while. Some people simply do not like the "sound" of horns. To me, the only horns I really like are the Altec 811/511 with appropriate drives. The larger Klipsch sound OK- but when compared to the ALtecs I go with ALtecs everytime.

It depends on your amp. If you're pushing your amp past what it wants to do (e.g. if your amp is close to the maximum power it can put out), you will cause your amp to clip, which will destroy your amp and your speakers. If your amp has plenty of power to feed both speakers, don't worry about it and just turn it up a bit more like you said.

Combination of speakers, amplification, sound source & person can be a complex affair! But once understood and matched it is magical!

Yea, I don't listen too loud anymore, esp with neighbors at night. dc270 - I read that link, but cannot (just a dummy sometimes) figure out what is about the 250 and what is about the 1051. Who is Roger Russell BTW ? I can hear you LOL :)
