Earlier this week, I bought a pair of 8228s at a thrift store for 80 bucks, not knowing anything about them prior to this site. I was amazed to see the amount of "enthusiasm" on these speakers! The Cabinets are in decent shape, 8/10. The grills are attached, but could be fixed up. 8/10. The 12" woofers need new foam. I just bought a repair kit on simply speaker as suggested in this site. (Thank you...) The tweeters are crisp. No real issues there 9/10. The switches are in good working order as well.

The mid range drivers however.... Not much info on them thus the reason for the tread.

The MCS 683-8228s. Lots of good information, and so far has been incredibly helpful.

My mid ranges (2 of 4) are completely blown out.

From the other threads I've read, they are 6 inches in diameter, 2.5 cones, and 4.6inches depth. 5 ohms.

I'm looking to replace them with either identical or very similar specs mid drivers...

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just started this project last night and I want to hear why these are so sought after.

Those are the ones with the dome midrange and tweeters?
Not sure if those domes were used in other models or brands of speakers, if they were that would help widen your possibilities for finding some. Ebay maybe.
Two other options, have yours repaired, if repairable. AK'er gordonw might be able to offer any opinion.
If OEM drivers are not an option, maybe call partsexpress and talk with their reps about proper replacement drivers they might suggest.
 
Have you taken the "bad Mids" out of the cabinets to test them individually? For me, it has aways been a bad tweeter, usually a broken lead and not blown. It may also be a wire in the crossover not connected properly or a bad capacitor in the crossover.
 
I switched the good mids for the bad ones. The issue wasn't with the crossover, as they did make sound. The remaining mids themselves are no good. Im not sure if they can be fixed... if so, I would rather have them fixed than try to find 40-50 year old speakers lol! If of course that isn't the case, Id like to find something equivalent that matches the older mids that are blown out.

id rather go this route, if it is possible. repairing them that is
 
MillerSound might be another option for repair.
I've had them repair a pair of woofers. They were quick and very reasonably priced. Highly recommended.
I've heard they don't repair tweeters so not sure if they would repair your dome mids. Wouldn't hurt to contact them and ask.
