MCS 683-8231 speaker - worth refoaming?

Hi,

Has anybody got any info/feedback on these?

I acquired these speakers together with MCS 3225 receiver. Cannot find any info on them. I know different manufacturers were making devices for MCS brand but I cannot associate this one with anything. Only thing I know is that they are "made in USA". The veneer looks cheap and overall looks like it is a lower end speaker. Foams are disintegrated.

Question is - do you think they are worth any investment or are a useless trash?

They look very low end to me. If you have never refoamed speakers those would be great to practice on.

I would say no unless you want to practice refoaming. They are fairly generic speakers, the kind that came with the all in one systems which would have reasonable electronics and pressboard speakers. If you want to get an idea of the quality of these or any other speakers, give a knock on the side of the speaker. If it sounds hollow and thin, move along there's nothing to listen to here.

They look like they are probably rack speakers. Not worth keeping. But spending $20 to 30 for a foam kit may be worthwhile. You can get them working and pass them on instead of having them end up in a landfill. Those are the type of speakers I would fix up and donate to a thrift if I could not sell on Craig's List.

Probably need to be recapped, too. I would use electrolytics if I were to replace them. They are not worth the extra that films would cost. But unless you have ready access or are placing an on-line order for other stuff, you will pay more for shipping than the caps.

JC Penny "Trainload Sale" Oct 1981. My first stereo system. 25 watt receiver, entry level turn table and "those speakers" Only $299.00. I just turned 16. I remember those woofers bottoming out playing heavy bass music. Had to be careful. 30 watt max is what they were. I'd recap them just for the leaning experience.

Maybe good for practicing on your refoam of woofer skills if needed but, if not, I'd donate them and not waste my time, effort, or money. That would be my personal choice.

but I have 2 sets. they were paired with 2 different receivers in the 28-35 watt range from the early 80's, but not the same year.

decent garage speakers, but hard to refoam as the cone size is like 8.5" so you have to get all 3 measurements and callup midwest/si,mply/springfield.

However....I just so happen to have a set of 8" parts express drivers that will fit if I re-drill so I get to make myself a cheap set of store speakers for demo...
