MCS 8330 speakers - monster sleeper!

For over a year now I've been using these in my living room setup and I have to say they are quite nice for being sneaky Technics... I found them at a Goodwill for 20 bucks and couldnt be happier.

Then I went on the ol' CL today and found a guy who was selling TWO sets of these behemoths for $100, including a 75wpc MCS receiver. According to him he was the original owner and loved the sound but he needed more space in his garage so he parted with the whole lot. After lining these up I was shocked to realize that the woofers and tweeters in my own pair were not original! At some point I guess they were rebuilt; the woofers actually look smaller by comparison.

Anyway, I've always had a soft spot for MCS because of it being under-valued quality stuff, for the most part. The receiver will need a good cleaning before I send it through its tests. I was bummed though to see that one of the mids had the cone punched in a bit :/ it's not terrible but i'm having trouble pulling it back up without damaging it further. Any suggestions aside from duct tape?

I use tape of varying strengths, from blue painter's tape for little paper drivers all the way up to VHB for metal domes. never had any issues, always brace the cap so you don't pull on the edges if it's a glued dust cap.

If it's paper based, and you're desperate, you could also try softening the cap with alcohol or whatever solvent is used for refoaming your particular driver.

Some folks use vacuum cleaners, i've not tried that myself. Also heard of using a pin, tho only on vented caps.

Weighing aestetic vs potential damage is up to you, but if you've got 3 pair, and one pair is 2/3 replacement drivers, seems you've got some spare mids...

thing is, the mids on my original were totally pushed in. I ended up poking a hole in the caps and using a shaped paper clip to reform the cap. At the time, I didn't really care about the damage because the price was right.

I've been sticking with duct tape (heh) and I'm making good progress with minimal damage. Still, not the end of the world if I end up completely ruining it.
