MCS linear phase 683-8355?

Can anyone tell me something about these? Picked them up from my boss today for free. Excellent condition on first appearance. Havent gotten to open them yet, or apply power. But free is free so i snagged em. Any info is appreciated.

Made for JC Penney by Technics. In the Technics speaker lineup, the linear phase series was pretty much at the top. The MCS offerings would have been from the bottom of that series, or flatteringly close relatives.

Google Technics SB-10000, or SB-7000 to see what the top of that line looks like.
 
Most likely from a rack system. Look similar to some of the lower end Technics models, only way to tell is to pull the speakers and check the quality, also check the x-over and cabinet thickness, that will tell you alot.
 
The majority of Technics-made speakers were not every good, even the ones not sold as part of a rack system. Cheap drivers in thin unbraced cabinets, they went for gimmickry more often than quality sound. Bowtie has listed a couple of exceptions; check out thevintageknob.org for more.

I know, I have a pair sitting under a bench in my garage, picked 'em up a thrift store cheap, hooked them up and was thoroughly unimpressed, took a peek inside and all I could think was yuck, probably be under that bench for a long time

I have a pair of SB-5000a's and a pair of SB-X10 - their late 70's early 80's offerings, very good speakers, most of their speakers after that are pretty much garbage.
