Measuring Large Advents for Speaker Re-foam - 10" ?!

So, I've got a pair of original bullnose Large Advent Loudspeakers with the masonite frame...I'm going to re-foam them. All the specs I see say these are 10" speakers, but for the life of me I can't measure it in any direction that gets me close to 10". I measured the outer frame, mounting hole to mounting hole, outside of the surround, cone, etc. Nothing gets me a reasonable approximation of 10".

Just want to be 1000% sure I order the correct kit.

What am I measuring wrong?...I'm 100% sure the speakers are original factory.

Simply Speaker is very familiar with these speakers, they'll be able to help. Take note as to whether the foam is inverted on these or not, I believe Masonite framed advents have inverted surrounds (to avoid rubbing on the frame). Rob you are measuring without the Masonite attached? It's a 10" woofer if stock.

Masonite is still attached, maybe thats the problem (I can't get a full measurement of the speaker). I just saw on simply speaker that the cone is 7.5", so that confirms what I'm seeing. Thanks for pointing me in their direction (good to know they're a reputable place to buy these too!)

Yes, ordering from a company that supplies proper foams in general will have generally have the correct foam for the Advent no measuring necessary.

If your speakers are the original walnut they are not bullnose. Bullnose is a rounded edge as used on the New Advent walnut version. The Advent identify thread has this wrong.

The original Advent walnut has a chamfered edge or beveled with a slight lip.

Yup, I was a little confused since the identify thread said bullnose...I thought "I wouldn't call this bullnose, more of a bevel"...thanks for clarifying it, that's what I've got!

While you have the woofers out it would be a great time to recap the x-overs on these and really get that FRIED EGG singing!!!

Yes, the bevel-front ones are the earliest version.

And yes- there is a very specific surround for these Advent woofers. Correct dimensions, AND correct soft composition (the foam is not stiff at all).

Yeah, I get the vibe that Simply Speaker is the best source for these surrounds. Made specifically for the advents and they seem like a well respected professional outfit. They have an extensive vid on re-foaming these specific speakers, which is really cool too.

I was planning on recapping too, but (admittedly without a lot of googling yet) I don't know what caps are needed. Anyone have a list for these crossovers? (after a LITTLE googling, it looks like people are doing some custom wacky configurations at times...I'm looking for the easy, non-fussy route ) I tend to order from Mouser because they have everything and I have an account already, but feel free to share your favorite source.

There were three different revisions of the crossover in your Large Walnut Veneer Advents.This website will help you identify which one you have.

You will want to use non polar electrolytic or Metalized Polypropylene Film Capacitors. Several good sources including Soniccraft, Madisound, Erse, Parts Express and others. There is a wealth of information here and at Classic Speaker Pages.
