Merlin Olsen dead.

I met Merlin and his brother Phil along with the rest of the L.A. Rams at a football camp on Maui when I was a kid.

R.I.P. Mr. Olsen.

The first defensive lineman I ever paid attention to as a kid. His play made me later appreciate Alan Page and Joe Greene. His former coach George Allen tried to trade for him when he subsequently coached the Redskins, but the Rams and Olsen weren't interested. In retrospect, being in LA was better for his later acting and broadcast career. A class act all around.

He was one of those guys that when you watched him on TV, life just seemed a bit better for the moment. RIP.

I was a big fan of Olsen and Alan Page when I was a kid. Both completed higher degrees while playing in the NFL -- Olsen earned a Masters in Economics and Page a law degree. Don't see too many of the current pro players doing that. Oh, and Rosie Greer, one of Olsen's fellow "Fearsome Foursome," he was the man too, helping tackle Sirhan Sirhan. An era has passed us by.

RIP, Mr. Olsen.
