Micro-Acoustics FRM-3 Surrounds?

I picked up a pair of these Micro-Acoustics FRM-3AX's from a local guy off ebay, but the surrounds are shot (after he assured me they were good) and am looking to replace them. Question is, are they even worth repairing, or should I just pick up a pair of new woofers? They sound OK even with the broken surrounds, the tweeters sound particularly nice - it seems they would be worth fixing if I could find the right foams for them.

Refoaming them shouldn't be a problem. Finding new woofers that will match the parameters of the original drivers won't be an easy task. Refoam 'em. :yes:
 
I would like to re-foam them, but I can't find a kit for this speaker. The woofer is very similar to an advent prodigy though, maybe one of those kits will work. The thing is a re-foam kit is like $30, I can get a pair of Dayton classic 8" woofers for like $40 brand new.
 
By all means refoam them. Check with GordonW,or Rick Cobb/loonytune2001,on ebay.
One or the other will get you taken care of,or point you in the right direction.BTW:GordonW,is here on AK.

I had a pair of FRM-3AX in the day and it was an amazing pair of speakers.

Well worth repairing the original woofers and getting back to the original sound.

I stupidly replaced mine with a pair of Pyle Drivers back in 1989 and even though they had more bass response, the sound was nor bass heavy and treble heavy with a little lacking in the mids. The original sound was more balanced.

Your cabinets look pretty good, mine were shot, after I gave them to my nephew and they were later exposed to moisture.

BTW, how much did you pay for them, if you can tell us?

They do look awful bosey. Refoam them it is easy and well worth it in just the plain satisfaction of doing it yourself.

The Dayton woofer will not match the crossover or the port tunning of the cabinet. It may or may not sound as good as they are stock.

These things are damn solid. 3/4" MDF on the back, sides, top and bottom, and the front baffle is one inch thick! :music:

I doubt much serious thought went into the crossover in those, probably just a cap and coil but try and refoam first, if that fails them go get some cheap used Bose 301 woofers that have been refoamed already...at least you already know they work in a cabinet like that

I first thought these were cheap 301 knockoffs but they seem much better built than the 301's cheap hollow sounding particleboard cabinet.
