Microsoft driving me nuts!

Hi folks. I have been trying to make windows 7 work after finally being forced to get rid of a beautifully tailored windows XP system. After a weak of work I have finally gotten it to a nearly usable state. The thing that is driving me nuts is that I need at add all of these small software bits like Office Starter and Windows Backup and I can't seem to get them from Microsoft. If I search for them they are only available from scary third party vendors that sneak in Malware and adware weather you OK it or not. It seems like Microsoft left out a lot and does not provide it. Am I missing something? Is there a secret download center at Microsoft? I'm going nuts chasing third party adware and garbage that comes in on this stuff! I have had more fun falling off of a cliff!:nutz::nutz::nutz::dammit:

XP did not come with Office, and only XP Pro came with a crappy back up utility, all versions 7 have a straight forward and functional back up built in. So the 'differences' you mention are not, really. Windows is not really a one-stop-shop for every functionality you need, its a foundation. If they tried to integrate everything they would get sued for anti-trust, again.

Yes, new shoes often hurt. The old falling apart ones are much more comfortable. Break the new ones in, you'll be fine.

If you just need something to use at home for spread sheet and a little word processing, just dl OpenOffice. It's now run by Apache but looks the same. Free. Or, you can probably find Lotus Smart Suite at Amazon for a few bucks.

Either one looks like and works essentially like the MS products.

Office Starter was a flop, and seemingly abandoned. Look here instead: http://www.libreoffice.org/

The backup proggie in Win7 works fine. http://www.pcworld.com/article/186997/win7_backup.html

If you're looking for a backup with more features, check this out: http://www.techradar.com/us/news/so...p-software-11-programs-we-recommend-1137924/1

It's in there?? Thanks. I'll have another look. And BTW I can see why Starter was a flop! I'll try the other one. Thanks.

Windows 7 Pro 64 is the best Microsoft product. I bet most people that complain about it is when they try to run hardware not designed for it.

I still use Office 2003 with it. I try not to add bloat ware onto any computer to prevent excessive memory usage or any software that may try to install extra crap.

For word processing there are a couple of lite options. Jarte is lite and FAST and free. It uses the MS Wordpad engine. The program is free. For $20 there is a slightly more featured version, not necessary. It is.so good, I sent in the $20 years ago just to support the programmer who is very communicative.

Abiword is a more full featured program and also free. Again lite compared to those office suites. I used it in my business for everything. For a spreadsheet I use Gnumeric. Before any respond, both are available for Windows.

I used Smartsuite and replay like it, especially as I used Organizer rather than Outlook. Sadly IBM stopped development with the last version Smartsuite '98 and the world has bypassed it. If looking for a full office suite of high quality and do not like the new MS Office marketing system, look for at Corel WordPerfet Office Suite. The basic suite has been around forever and rather than extreme makeovers every couple of years preferring to just making it better. And, it does not change the file formats and until the more recent versions could read formats going back to the old old days including Wordstar and a number of them that probably no one even remembers. It also is one of the more complete graphics readers. This was my office's official suite and never had to use MS Office.

Lotus Organizer is a great app.
