Microsoft Office for Win 7 to Own

nah, if you have been in the industry as long as I have, hating MS is required.

Its not that they put out a product you may either like, or dislike, they actively go after you. Not many corporate entities can claim that.

Back in the PowerBuilder days a higher up once told me: "No one every got fired for buying Microsoft." Pretty much sez it all:)

& they all had hater camps - Oracle, IBM, HP, MS, Apple. Just got tired of all the camp wars, can barely spell "IT" anymore TG I'm out of it.

I've been using Open Office since the year it was released. Works for everything I do and opens everything I throw at it. You should at least give it a trial run.

I know exactly what you're saying. Used to have to layout everything I built in pencil, then started using a calculator, then cad, then excel.

I'm basically afraid to chance using something else.

Laptop came with 7, I don't know if I have a key ? Will libreoffice run all my macros, buttons, drop downs, formulas/equations etc etc ?

Libre Office is constantly updating so that should tell you the state of the coding. I use the spreadsheet to track my ebay stuff but if my job depended on the software, I would think twice. Libre sometimes is stable, other times is crashy.

I have stuff I depend on working right every time and everyday, lots of VBA crap in there. I find excel to be a god send as far as making my job much easier.

I have 10 on another laptop and find it impossible to work with, just can't find my way around easily. Wants me to have permissions to do things I should have permissions to do and a big ordeal to do or figure out.

If you are an MS Office power user you will find OpenOffice sorely lacking in app to app copy/paste capability, easy object embedding, and general command compatibility. But it does work for a lot of people.

I tried a program on libreoffice calc on my ubuntu machine at home and no luck. Calculations are way off and others are not happening at all, not reacting to form controls correctly, etc.

Your experience sums up the usefulness of Libre Office.

So you have the XP computer not connected to the internet and never let anyone else touch it (not USB connection or CD/DVD drive)? That is the only way you are guaranteed not to get a virus.

I have stuff on here from 2003, can't remember exactly. :)

It's getting to where some sites won't open because my Google browser is to old. Ublock origin helps.

Still patiently waiting on the 2010 to show up.

I have to drop everything and get myself thinking in excel mode to deal with issues, but I know once it's accomplished it's done. Already know I have this one that gives problems in drawing the arc correctly when on the newer versions of excel. Instead of starting at the left and ending at the right, it seems to start at the right and and draws the circle ending at the left. lol

There's been a lot of warnings of attacks ever since I've been on xp, it was the same with previous versions and it'll be the same with 10. I keep my files and programs backed up on disks in case the hd fails.
"Proper" backups are the only effective defense against malware compromises.

Problem is people don't understand "Proper"

It means to media that is not network connected , stored off site and retained for at least a year.

Uploading stuff to some of those "Cloud" backup sites while nice is not a full solution.

Exactly, if the network was down or destroyed somehow you'd be out of luck.

I burn all my work files to a physical disk quarterly. I need to grab an ss external hard drive and just keep it all there, but those can fail too. lol
