mid vs. late production ar-2ax speakers

i have found a pair of what appear to be late production (250K serial numbers on both) 2ax's at the local thrift. they have the black plastic (?) tweeter with AR on the frame, rotting foam woofer surrounds, and are clad in vinyl that's not half bad.

i already have a fine pair of mid-production ar-2ax's, with the small round dome tweeter, new foam woofer surrounds, very nice walnut veneer. i am unsure of the serial numbers on these, because the backs have been sanded.

can anyone enlighten me to what changed in the tweeter, if there were any changes in the woofer towards the end of the 2ax production run, and how they might compare with each other?
