Midrange Driver Has No Sound But Measures 6.8 ohm

Firstly my man cave is a finished basement. I’m in Minnesota where we are very humid in the summer. I run 2 dehumidifier’s 24/7 all summer. It’s 32° F here today but I still turned mine on already, with the spring melt the basement gets humid. There’s no way that I want to risk my audio equipment for a little higher electric bill. I monitor the humidity and keep it right around 35%.

By removing the dust cap, you will be able to see the gap between the voice coil and the magnet. You should be able to look down inside and quite possibly actually see the rust or corrosion or whatever it is that hanging this up. I have done it. I’ve been down this road myself.

By the way, when I do sit down to listen, I turn the dehumidifiers off-too noisy.

Here’s a rough idea what you’re going to see. I removed the dust cap from the speaker because I thought it sounded like crap and when I saw the repair job the local experts did… yeah I won’t be going back there but that’s besides the point.

So you might see corrosion from this vantage point but you’re only seeing one side of the gap if you know what I mean??? The thing in the middle is the magnet and there’s a coil that surrounds it. That coil is connected to the cone.

this might help you. https://www.nmfjjrorrt.top/products.aspx?cname=speaker+construction&cid=95

The corrosion is most likely between the coil and the center pole piece or on the outside of the coil which you won’t be able to see.

IMO, if you're going to have a pro try to repair it, best to leave it as-is. You're more likely to do more damage, and a profesional might not want to tackle the job after you've messed with it.

If I do this and I see rust or corrosion will I be able to do something to fix the situation ? Would I also be able to tell if the magnet is causing my issue ? As mentioned in an earlier post these are very rare drivers and I don't want to mess anything up.

Well, in any case, if you take anything away from my comments, try to determine the root cause because only fixing it won’t keep the rest of your stuff from having problems if the root cause is the environment. Heat and humidity- 2 killers of lots of stuff!!!

To answer your question if anything can be done - it all depends what the obstruction is and the severity of it. It’s anybody’s guess. As I said before I trust myself more than I trust a lot of people, someone mentioned in an earlier post there’s a guy here on Audiokarma that might be able to help you, maybe he will, maybe he won’t and he’d probably tell you the same thing. Could you screw it up? Sure you could so could I. I change the oil in my car. Could I screw that up sure I could, I could I could forget the little washer on the drain plug screw, I could accidentally leave the O-ring behind from the oil filter. I learn from doing but if it were an explosive I’d farm it out. But sending it out is fine too- cut your teeth on something that doesn’t make you so nervous.
