Migraines, another day down the drain

HiFiCanada

Caregiver
I had a Migraines today, and on a holiday above all, my plans are down the drain, since migraines seems to make discisions around here, it decides if I work or not, it decides if I have a good day or not, enjoy my holiday or not.
Anyone else out there with migraines, and what are the remedies you take to get rid of it, or reduce it's effect of extreme pain.

Other than an occasional headache, luckily, I have never had to experience them. I hear they can be quite debilitating and relentless. I am sorry you have to suffer from them.

I get 'em. Problem is they start as regular headaches, so I never know if it's a regular headache or the start of a migrane. So far, I've tried a few prescription meds: Maxalt, Imitrex, and Zomig. All have worked for at least 2-3 doses, but then lose their effectiveness. Zomig recently started giving me severe indigestion and my throat starts to swell a litte (both listed side effects). Anyways, i'm off to the doctor again soon to try something else.....

Excedrine M works as well as anyting for me. I'm sorry you have such troubles. I'll say a prayer brother.. I hope you can recover your holiday.

My dad suffered from migraines as a teen - made his high school career 5 years instead of 4 and then prevented him from volunteering for the armed forces with his friends in WWII. Eventually he "grew out of them." I never got the headaches, although I have had the visual effects a few times, very infrequently. And I know some people who have never gotten rid of them.

Given the above, I wish you the best of luck in finding treatment that helps you, as results seem to vary widely.

The things that seem to trigger it for me are skipping a meal, dehydration, and stress. Unfortunately, those are three things that tend to go together (eg. when traveling). I've found that any regular headache can turn into a migraine, but I can often stop it if I take care of myself soon enough. Having something to eat and drink (if I need it) followed by some quiet and dark relaxation is the key. The worst thing I can do it trying to ignore it so I can finish what I'm doing. Once it passes a certain stage, nothing but a full night's sleep will make it go away. Fortunately, they always go away over night.

Luckily, migraines are one painful thing I have not experienced and would like to keep it that way. I thought, however, I would point out something to those that use Excedrin Migraine. It is a rip off.

Read the active ingredients and you will find that they are they exact same ingredient in regular Excedrin in the same proportions. Wal Mart has a generic version that is half the price. Don't fall for bullshit advertising hocus pocus.

I get them a few times a year. Sometimes they last four or five hours, recently I had one last nearly 3 days. Sleep is the only thing that works for me. On that last go-round, I slept 48 hours out of 60. I was getting close to going to the hospital when it finally broke.

I've read that marijuana gets rid of them pretty quickly, but I haven't tried it.

i think i fall into the same boat as Andy...i have diabetes as well[tho the migraines predate it]so the triggers are often a bit easier to trip in my case...average painkillers followed by sleep[often not much of a choice] is all that works...ruins a day for sure

Sleep laying down, is the worst thing I can do, when I start getting migraines, I usually wake up with one, and then I got to get up, and sit in a chair,up right. Laying down will cause to much pressure and migraines will be worse. I take Gravol,so as to be able to sleep a little. I got to time it right, staying up, then when the pain changes a bit, were I know I can sit in the chair after taking Gravol, then it's a waiting game. Usually all day, and strange as this may seem, usually goes away about 5 -8 PM.
I think it's the barometric pressure, a weather change, I have had it several times, when the wind changes direction, [watching the neighbor's flag] that the migraines is gone within 15 minutes. But it's a bitch, wasting a whole day, and there is nothing I can do about it.

Sorry to hear about the migraines. I get them as well I'm not sure what triggers them but I know I'm gonna get one because I see dark spots and then start to feel nauseated. I have to sleep in a recliner for an hour or 2 to get rid of it. Pills don't seem to help but a friend of mine told me there is a shot you can get from a doctor that helps to clear then up I haven't tried that yet.

My cousin has them. I recall saying he thinks he's found a miracle remedy..very simple but works for him. Don't recall what it was exactly...something like a few minutes of pure oxygen. I'll ask him, maybe it's worth a try.

Mine always start as sinus headaches then morph into relentless migraines. Never had one pass in less then 8 hours and they render me pretty much useless. I hate that feeling... :thumbsdn:

My late Mother suffered with Migraines her entire life.
I've only had 1 in my lifetime.....incredible pain and sick as a dog.
I slept for almost 16 hours, and it was gone.

I rarely get migraines, although I've had a few whoppers like what Jon's described below.

I get a lot of tension headaches, which can be just as debilitating imho. I have very poor back muscles and it just compounds the issue. I don't handle stress very well either, and again that adds to the problems.

As to Marijuana, someone said that to me once too. All I'll say is that I had one of the filthiest headaches after having a cone many years ago. I won't touch that **** now. It was a very unpleasant experience.

No migraines here but I suffered from their nasty cousin, cluster headaches, all through my 20s and into my 30s. I estimate I had something in the neighborhood of 10,000+ attacks through those years. NOT an experience I'd care to repeat.

I'm a migrainer. UGH! Mine are caused by stress, not eating on time and some foods. If I catch it at it's first twinges, I take Excedrin (generic) from Family Dollar Store and that will usually stave it off.

If I wake up with it or the Excedrin doesn't work, I take Imitrex. Then I feel like I've been through a wringer and have to sleep for quite a while.

I had hoped when I got to a certain age and went through menopause they would go away, as they sometimes appeared on a "monthly" basis. But no such luck.

Thank God for Imitrex.

I suffer cluster headaches (known as suicide headaches in medical circles!) had them for over 30 years and was misdiagnosed as migraine for over 20. Oxygen at 10 litres per minute for 10/15 minutes stops it dead.

I am also a welder fabricator, we have lots of oxygen, I opened the torch oxygen side, full blast for 5 minutes, but it did not help me any. I think there are about a 1000 different kinds of headaches, and the causes of them.
Mine are painful, once I accidently stuck my finger in the snowblower and badly hurt, the doctor was sewing it back up and the painkiller wore off, He said , that he will have to stop stiching and give me some more pain killer, I said no, this pain is nothing compared to migraines, the doctor was surprised.
