Miles Davis/Kind of Blue vinyl

The first batch was already sent out and received by those who were quick on the draw, the second batch is in the pressing process. I do not have mine yet I fall in the second batch bunch, but know many who have it and have stated it’s flawless.

Thats what I thought first go myself. I cleaned my stylus and the record. It was still there. I even tried my second deck. It's on the first side only.
I concur doctor. Definitely something going on with that first side. Excellent diagnosis. Catch you on the flip side. :rflmao:

I returned my copy to the record store with the same issue. Fortunately I have a pre-owned original with a slight amount of surface noise that I dubbed to CD using a 3BX expander thats acceptable. I was hoping a new release would be better. Guess not. My new Brubeck Take 5 was perfect.

Just a thought, but there's a chance it could be a lot of static build up. The only reason I'm bringing it up is that I recently bought the 60th Anniversary Impulse! boxset and experienced the exact same thing. On about three tracks there was distortion on higher notes at certain points in the songs in the right channel, even after running the brush over it. Thankfully, I have the original release for a couple of these tracks. Played those, no distortion. I assumed I got a bum pressing. But I did notice that the static build up when I opened the boxset was ridiculous. I had a real difficult time just pulling the discs from the sleeves (which were some kind of coated paper). So I gave all the discs a bath and washed them thoroughly....and the distortion disappeared. I put them back in some MoFi anti-static sleeves, haven't had a problem since. So I guess that's a long way to say, try giving it a good wash before you discard.

That's so funny. I just purchased a DBX II 128 dynamic range expander to do the exact same thing. I want to burn recordings from record onto tapes & cd's.
how does it sound after being burned? I am curious. :)

DBX 128 is a combo unit. First it has a modified deci linear noise reduction system for consumer tape machines that encodes the signal to be recorded by the tape machine. Then when you play the tape back it decodes the tape bring back that natural sound but also reducing tape noise and distortion by over 40 db. Providing -10 is your new 0 record level for a 1/4 trk stereo R2R tape recorder and 7 1/2 ips. Then the noise reduction section is a single band unit that can compress or expand the dynamic range slightly. to much expansion and you will notice high frequency and mid range pumping by the bass frequencies. The 3 BX divides the audio spectrum in to bass mid and high bands preventing pumping when expanding the dynamics much further than the 119/128. As I use a CD recorder now I got rid of my professional 157 and 155 noise reduction units that gave over 100 db signal to noise when used with a 15 in 2 trk professional R2R Ampex studio tape machines.

Thank you so much for the detailed report on my DBX unit. Yeah, I have to be honest, I think it may be broken because it does not do anything for the sound and none of the little lights light up at all except for the power light. I'm going to have to have mine serviced. I got it as a freebie from my dad who thought I could fix it but with something like this, I don't even know where to start. I may just give up and invest in the one you have. I am trying to boost tapes and records to playback at 90db like cd's. I also would like to record records onto tapes and decompress it later using the expander to reproduce what was lost in the original recording. I hope I am on the right track here... :)

I've got the 2010 release mastered by Kevin Gray and the latest UHQR from Analogue Productions and just compared the two.

On the first track So What, during Miles' horn replies at the beginning, I am hearing some low level crunchiness/static-like artifacts out of the right channel.

I hear a similar thing - A little roughness in the way the notes are played. It's harsher on my 2010 pressing but on the Analogue Productions UHQR it's less pronounced and sounds more like air across a reed.

On tracks Blue and Green & Flamenco Sketches, there is a constant low level hiss. Is that the source tape?

That swishing sound is brushes across the drum head.

I was thinking of picking up a different release, Analog Productions remaster on their UHQR Clarity Vinyl

The UHQR is a big improvement. Soundstage is wider and taller, the separation of instruments is better, and it's much easier to hear what's in those sounds you originally commented on.

With all of that, I think the UHQR gives a better sense of the musicians playing with and in response to each other. For me it's a more engaging representation of the performance. IMO YMMV, etc.
