I’ve had the great fortune to run into two older designs dating from the 60’s. A pair of ES-99 Lancers end L77 Lancers. Both from the same era, le20 tweeter, Alnico LE14a for the 99c a LE10a and passive in the L77. All of the woofers pulled and sent to Mathew Shelton of Utah Reconing. He’s done close to 50 pair for me. These will have the lanseloy surrounds removed, new foam.
I went to work on the cabinets with sandpaper and Mahoney’s walnut oil, then three coats of wax. The woofers were all done Sat, then installed. The cabinets are out of this world.
I’ve spent the entire day listening to the L77. Hands die, one of the finest sounding JBL I’ve ever owned. I have owned a ton. It’s perfectly balanced, outstanding low end, and the most wonderful mid/top end.
The S99 has followed suit. Its low end is excellent with the big 14”. Top end/midrange is outstanding.
I can’t believe speakers dating back to the 60’s can sound this good??! Like my Altec Flamenco, some things get better with age. Simply incredible.
