I picked up a pair of these cute little speakers about two weeks ago, and I thought I would post a thread on here about them. From what I can gather, they were made anywhere from the early 80s to the early 90s. These speakers were made after Jensen acquired the Advent name, and there were two variations, the mini advent and mini advent ii. There were also outdoor versions of both iterations of the speakers. I own a set of the mini advent ii's and the indoor/outdoor mini advent ii's. They have a 5 1/4in woofer and what looks to be a 1in tweeter, and they are also front ported so hopefully they will work well close to a wall. I had the indoor only pair running for a little while about a week ago, and they sound pretty good even with bad surrounds (the surrounds looked fine when I first got them but I took the covers off after I used them and they started to tear). They have slightly emphasized highs (this could be just because the surrounds are rotten), but overall they never sounded harsh or bad in any way. They definitely sounded better than the pair of dayton b652's I picked up for $12 at goodwill, those had absolutely no highs whatsoever. Pretty good I'd say for a pair of speakers I got for free with a $20 kenwood av receiver. I bought the outdoor variants after the first for $40 online because I wanted a matching pair, and because I read somewhere that the surrounds on the outdoors were made of a different material that doesn't rot. Unfortunately that was a lie, but I'm willing to pay $40 for two surround kits because I like these speakers. Not really because of their sound quality (which is still pretty good), but because they just look really neat. Bottom line is that I'd recommend a pair of these if you can find them for under $20 or so.
Here are the two next to each other. They are both made of plastic, but the accents on the indoor only models are real wood.
A pioneer hpm 40 for scale
There are four screw holes on the back for wall mounting, but you'll have to punch holes in the labels to use them. I don't know what size threads they are.
This is what they look like without grilles. I thought that the white one looked quite nice with the black accent.
That gave me the idea of putting the black grilles on the white speakers. I quite like them this way, so I'm thinking about buying a second set of cloth grilles for them.
The drivers look identical from the back, but the outdoor model has a coating on the paper woofer whereas the indoor only one does not. They also have different part numbers, but I doubt that they would sound very different, if they do at all.
If we look at the tweeters we can see that the top number is the same, but the bottom one is not. I believe that the top number is the part number though, so I think that it's safe to say that both variants of the mini advent ii share identical tweeters but different woofers.
