mini licence/name plates

remember those? so you could have your name on your bike? I've been looking around and cant find them anywhere. just got a really neat wagon for my grandson, and thought it would be cool to get one of those for it. or maybe I'm just old and my idea of cool is outdated! sigh...

I remember in the '50s-early '60s the Dallas Police Dep't would sell through the schools bicycle license plates that would go under the back of the seat, and would be registered by serial number with the police. My Dad had me get the plate a few times.

Rick's Restorations in Vegas has done a few I hear quite cheap but who knows?:):thmbsp:
 
i still have a personalized bike license plate that i've had since the 60's, when it was on my sting-ray. mine is old school california style, black plate with yellow letters. right now, its on my swap meet wagon. it will eventually end up on my wheelchair…



plenty of them still available, both new and vintage. various states. do an ebay search for "bicycle license plate name"

From a business point of view, they would have to be custom printed these days due to the number of odd kids names. In my day they had the most common names pre-lettered, but even then Lee, and as Buck has pointed out, his name wasn't available. Fine if your name was Jane or John, but these days Qaylar or Le-a (ledasha) would have stuff all chance of getting a pre-lettered one.

Even in the day when these were on the 360 display in the shops, can you imagine the store owners that got caught with too much stock on names that didn't sell. I suppose they would have been cheap enough though, both in cost and delivery. I wonder if they had FIS (free instore delivery) those days with minimum order values. I imagine the telephone order being something like.."I need one Callam, plus five Rebecca, six Michael, two Rodney..." etc.

Back to the OP's question, I wonder if you could DIY by banging some wooden letter blocks into some light aluminium and paint black over white on the recesses?
 
At the pharmacy where my wife works, they had a display of votive candle holders personalized by first name. One of the top sellers was "They didn't have your name."
 
Wasn't there a cereal boxtop mail-in promo for those back in the '50s? I seem to recall ordering an "ELVIS" one for my bike.

Yeah, I'm going back a bit.

they never had Rodney or Rod...ever...lord knows,i looked at enough trying to find one growing up,and never saw it :)
