Minimalism or stacks of equipment?

The best systems I have heard consistently utilize the least amount of components. I would like to say that there are exceptions, but I haven't come across any to date.

Power, Pre, Two Speakers, Server w/external HD, DAC (hidden) with maybe $75 worth of ICs and speaker wire. I'm good to go.
The server is an Olive Symphony which is a single box unit that does it all. So altogher I have 4 components & speakers.

I'm a minimilist with a couple of stacks of equipment. In another thread I said I have only one good system that serves double duty. It's used for 2 channel music and multichannel and AV. So, I have a preamp with no tone controls feeding 2 mono tube amps and 3 SS stereo amps. Those amps drive 4 full size ESL's and 3 subs.
As far as sources go, there are 2 Nakamichi cassette decks, 1 TEAC reel to reel, DVD player, CD player, SVHS tape deck, FM tuner, Lexicon processor and a Turntable. My music server computer is also connected with both audio and video (I play games on my computer). It has an external interface box for the sound card (SB X-Fi Pro Elite) that's on its own shelf in my rack.
Although I've got lots of devices connected I have no compressors, expanders or tone controls. The flexibility of separates and a couple of switchboxes (Russound TMS-3 tape monitor, JVC JX-100 Video Switcher etc.) makes it all work. Even with all I've mentioned music is mostly a 2 channel only pursuit.

For me, it all depends on the space available. My main system is a large stack, with plenty of components (including separate power amp/preamp/tuner). My auxiliary system, however, is much more minimalist, consisting of just a receiver, CD player, turntable, and speakers. I have enough components for several stacks of gear, but space rarely permits.

I saw this Hitachi all in one on craiglist with the record player, tuner, 8-track, preamp, and amp all in one component. It must have sounded awesome!

But I agree. :thmbsp:

I am 100% minimalist. To be honest it is not because of a philosophical audio belief. I do not have the money or room. I have nice Yammie reciever, CD player and JBL speakers. That's it. It is simply heaven.
