Minimus 7 woofer tweak

I think MCM 55-3853 is Discontinued? How about MCM 55-1856 instead?

Hello,

I've read through this thread and was wondering if I can use the MCM 55-1856 or MCM 55-1853 (still available) as replacement woofers in my M7's with the PZ 2.1 M7 crossover mod?

If so, does anyone know if I will need to modify the PZ 2.1 M7 crossover mod to suit these replacement woofers?

I see that 'gotvinyl' posted right above here their success with the MCM 55-3853 - however I cannot find this part any longer at MCM; unless I'm not looking in the right place?

Would love to hear everyone's thoughts and opinions and trials with such; in order to determine if these would be suitable.

Old thread

Just found my first set of minimus 77s after looking for a while for either set with dome tweeter
and only finding 2.5, m-18 and an rca for radio shack that's larger than all of em
Foam surrounds shot so while waiting for new I tried to find a suitable woofer to replace in the meantime
The various RS woofers I had were too small though the rca was close
I had a set of JVC gx50 speakers with a woofer just about exact size but with rubber
These speakers are quite a bit deeper than the 77s

These JVC woofers had serious excursion in their mini cabinets and sounded pretty decent

They look very much like the mcm woofers
Painted silver heavy cardboard cone
Dust cap is textured and seemingly same size
Beefier magnet than the m-77 more like the m-7 magnet

Listening to the m-77 with disintegrated foam against the replacement
It seems very much in favor of the JVC.The m-7 midrange is shout and not very articulate and weak on bass

The JVC bass is at least greatly increased with tone controls flat
They behave more like subwoofers
Midrange is quite articulate with a nicer, thicker hefty sound than the original sounding thin

The m-77 midrange could can be localized easily to the woofer to the point you listen for the tweeter working

I ABC'd these two against Boston A200 midrange and the replacement is much closer tonally

Putting felt around the tweeter seems to clear the upper range as well

But did I get lucky with the JVC?
I read somewhere someone else's brother installed a JVC woofer cause it looked similar
The optimus pro-7x? has a very similar looking woofer
In fact
The baffle change of that optimus speaker looks Luke the JVC gx50 if you were to fill in the baffle to the level of the beauty rings around the JVC drivers with bon do
The JVC came into production later in like 2005



Maybe someone could try these woofers out and measure parameters or just tell me if they think my ears are horrid

Has anyone tried ditching the passives and bi-amping these with a DSP instead? Since they seem so popular still, we could maintain different profiles for different driver combinations with much flatter response and better power handling than would be possible with passives.
