Minimus 77 mod question

Kaffeen

StereoHead
Recently I acquired a pair of the slightly larger Minimus 77 speakers. They appear to have a 4.5" woofer compared to the regular Minimus 7's 3.5" job. The cabinet is slightly larger as well. The tweeter is the same. My question is has anyone used the $15 ebay crossover and capacitor upgrade on this speaker? If so, was it a worthwhile mod?

I've done this upgrade on a set of Minimus 7Ws and was pleased with the result. And I have one of these upgrade kits sitting on the workbench. But before installing it, I'd like to hear some opinions.

do it on one and compare with the undone one. draw the wiring diag of the orig so you can redo it if you dont like what you hear, or use the undone one for ref. best to let YOUR ears do the judging.

before you move on, have you seen the partsexpress article in their projects section for a mod to the 77?

how long did you wait? I've asked him questions and always got an answer.
he may be away for mem day.

About a week ago. Yeah I'm a customer, too. So I thought there must be a good reason. But asking some folks here for opinions couldn't hurt.

:scratch2:...I coulda sworn they have a 5.25" woofer....least that was the foam size I used to refoam the woofers. Be aware that 77's use foam surrounds as compared to the 7's which use rubber. Most 77's are old enough that a refoam is in their near future.....

Modded the Minimus 77s

A little gas down the carb, hook up a fresh battery, and this old thread cranks back to life...

So I put the ebay Minimus 7 x-over mod into my set of 77s. It works about as expected, more crystally clear highs, no more spit-hiss. The surprise is the solid bass response. You'd expect the larger woofers of the 77 to have a little more bass than the 7s, and they do. But I was able to kick on the loudness and give the bass knob a twist and they handled it fine. So I'm happy to report the mod works well on the 77s, too.

They're powered by a Yamaha cr-640 that I got from fellower AKer Divotdog locally. Thanks Mel!!! This is a pretty nice setup.

They ARE 5.25" woofers and the Minimus 7's have 4" drivers, not 3.5".
