hi all, new to the boards here and was wondering if this is worth picking up. I've had old yamaha's, sherwoods, hafler separates, adcom separates, etc, but from what i read on the boards here, I should really look into this... An aquaintance of mine is moving, and I asked about the mint... and I mean mint pioneer sx 1010 in his set up.... perfect shape, original owner, not sure if he still has the box and manuals... but I do love the sound:music:....is it worth $200:scratch2:? Thx in advance for your advice and opinions....

I remember my uncle's setup that included a 1010 running a pair of HPM 100s. He lived in the middle of nowhere, he would blast his country music and it was amazing.

I say go for it.

hey guys,

thanks for your quick and thoughtful replies... :screwy:some more twists to the deal... i guess he wants to off all of his vintage stuff from mid 70's and NOT part it out and I'm thinking, sheesh, I thought we had a deal... so the deal is now $500 for all his vintage, which at this point there's 2 wild cards as I don't know which models they are until I get there this evening... so here's the list and let me know your 2 cents... cuz it just may save me hundreds... lol!!! thx in advance....

PIONEER SX 1010 RECEIVER mint.. this is what i'm after....

2 Pioneer CS-63DX FLOOR SPEAKERS mint... monsters... weigh like 75lbs each

TANDBERG REEL TO REEL TAPE DECK(unknown model at this point) excellent condition

TEAC CASSETTE DECK(unknown model at this point) excellent condition

DUAL 1229Q TURNTABLE w/ SURE CARTRIDGE NEEDLE good to very good condition, used the most of the 3 sources.

CS-63DX are Pioneer's TOTL speaker, the big brother to the CS-99. Personally, I never warmed to them and sold them. Still for $500 - I think you'd do OK, if it all works and is complete and in good cosmetic condition. You can sell the speakers for $200+ easy and maybe more.

thanks for everyone's input... and i do appreciate it. As to jim3860's response, i understand where you may give that advice and I have looked on ebay, forum sale sections etc.... and i've come to the conclusion that the members here at audio karma are most knowledgeable and helpful. Ebay prices are all over the place and mostly insane... and this fellow is an aquaintance... and I am after only the pioneer to complete my system... so the answer is to listen, not make a buck... as I sell for a living and really don't need another line of work... looking to enhance my hobby and to finally be able to afford the very pieces of equipment that I loved when I heard them in the show rooms but could not afford as a high school or college student. My lower line vintage stuff has been passed onto to my oldest son and daughter and they greatly appreciate the warm sound as opposed to listening to garbage apple docks w/ 2 cans of soda for speakers....

so w/ that said... this may sound harsh to you jim3860... if you don't like the thread... skip over it....or if you have alot of knowledge and would like to share.. maybe something constructive like what was proposed by eddantes.... which by the way I had not really considered, but that would be a great idea as I would just sell them at a more than reasonable price just to get to the pioneer. On my way to see the stuff... will report back as to which tandberg and teac he has... thanks all

thanks for the reply jim, as to looking up values on ebay and the boards... that's partly good advice, but the best advice usually comes from those in the know like you and others that are on here, not some random group of numbers on the bay or boards...i've read many threads and here on AK you guys take the time to warn someone of a impending disaster... i'm just trying to hedge my bets and not make a stupid beginner's mistake.... as far as attitude, point taken and look forward to AK communities constructive criticism.... as for bragging, i hadn't bought anything... and all i wanted is the pioneer...so yes, i'd like to brag that i got a sx 1010 for a reasonable price...and my major motivation is this is a hobby and i would like to not deal w/ the other pieces that i have no interest in, just the receiver...

now i've seen the equipment and tried once again to only buy the pioneer by itself...and to inform him that all the other pieces alone were worth at least $3-500 but to no avail... he's in moving out and taking nothing w/ him mode...and after about 30 minutes of listening and discussing.... his reply to me was this "are you going to buy all this for 5 bones or not... if not, i got other things to do"... so here's what 5 bones got me... and now i guess i am bragging over pure dumb luck it is:

1- pioneer sx 1010, no box or manual but in excellent condition

2x pioneer cs63dx speakers excellent condition and eddantes, your right... after about 20 minutes of listening... not my cup of tea....

1- dual 1229q in very good condition, but missing the dust cover

1- tandberg reel 2 reel model 9100x works and sounds good.

1- technics(not teac) m215 cassette deck... sounds like... a cassette deck...

he threw in a pair of speaker stands and the cabinet... i left the cabinet... no more room in my ride.... so following your advice, i guess i'm selling everything but the pioneer... much appreciated and thankful to everyone's input

one last question in regards to recapping... is it the age that it depends on or the hours in use... my point is the receiver was stored by his count since the late 90's early 2000's...

thx in advance

With regards to the Tandberg 9100X (my area of competence), jim3860 is actually correct. Recent eBay results are the most useful reference. There isn't enough turnover on pieces like that anywhere else in high enough volume to make it useful.

Recent relevant results:

9200XD (a newer, more desirable model w/Dolby but from same series): $179, $102, $113, $26 (parts unit)

Further back, a 9041X (that's the earlier 1/4-track version of the 9100X, closest to what you have) sold for $108, before that one went for $82, another for $100, for $52.

Varying conditions but none were fully overhauled. Market value isn't high enough to encourage people to go through them 100%, though they are a very good deck when working correctly.

This is not the easiest deck to service. Uses an early and somewhat primitive logic circuit with gate IC's, idler drive, known issues included dried sticky grease and higher than average degree of difficulty getting key parts. They also use a crossfield head design which doesn't tend to record well on modern back-coated tapes.

"Works and sounds good" is what people selling these decks usually say about them (particularly the less scrupulous or poorly informed sellers), My experience is that they NEVER work 100% correctly unless they've been freshly serviced. YMMV.

My take on value: sold to the unsuspecting, maybe $100. True value to someone that knows better? I wouldn't pay more than $50 for one.

thanks for your input john/jdurbin1, I for one know nothing about the tandberg r2r, i do have a 1040 receiver, beautiful, though low on the wattage. I don't intend on doing anything w/ the Tandberg...like you said, not really into giving it a thorough go thru... but am curious as to if you know about the caps in the pioneer... recap base on age or hours of use?

thx

My bad, just got done reading the forum rules...and no I would not want either you or I banned from AK.... Jim, thanks for your input... I was thinking along similiar lines though i personally think the technics tape deck is worth more like $10-20!!! And I do take your opinions in terms of the gear seriously, it was yours and vintage boys opinions that set my wheels down this path as my last encounter w/ totl pioneers was in the late 80's... and yes I loved the sound and warmth, but clearly out of my budget back then... as to the r2r, its going to be a very nice looking paper weight for now, my brother has expressed interest but realistically, i don't have the time or inclination of digging into that, also what is your thoughts on recapping... should the actual age or actual hours of use determine a recap project?

thx and once i get organized and settled, i'll put pics up,

The only hard and fast recap rules I follow are to get rid of Frakos whenever I run into them, along with certain others that I've learned are chronic failure points on a given model. Beyond that, if they're oozing or bulging they get replaced and if they're affecting the circuit operation (i.e. causing something to not work properly) they get replaced.

I have no blanket rules on replacing caps other than those, but can tell you I am not a fan of the "recap it and see if that makes it work right/better" school of vintage audio that seems very pervasive these days. I much prefer to FIX things first, and if replacing bad caps is part of the repair of a given problem, then they get replaced. If I'm curious about sonic improvements or a customer is paying for it, I'll replace more of them, or even all of them, but otherwise that isn't in my gamebook currently.

Not knowing the 1010 at all, I can't offer any advice on that.

I will however disagree with jim3860 on that R2R value: hogwash. Did you not see the recent sales results I listed? Those represent roughly 6 months of eBay data, and I'd have included Audiogon too except that there haven't been any 9000-series decks sold there to speak of (no surprise given how f'd up that site is since the redesign). Who would pay top of market ($150) for a deck like the 9100X that hasn't been thoroughly serviced by an expert? Regular maintenance does not extend to disassembly to remove/replaced dried yellow grease (they all have it) nor to belt & idler wheel replacement, nor to tension arm adjustments etc. These decks require fine-tuning to work their best and cleaning the tape path regularly while advisable is not a panacea for thorough expert maintenance of all the moving parts once a decade or so (it's almost a 40-year old deck). Oh, BTW - they are CHOCK full of Frako caps, too. Ticking time bombs, each and every one...

No, I stand by the $50-$100 valuation on that one. There's a reason the comps are mostly at or below $100.

John

I said it might bring $100 from an unsuspecting buyer. To me that isn't true market value. LMK if you want to spend that much on one of these decks, I can make a good living selling them at that price since they sell for way less than that locally fairly often.

Market value means what you can generally rely on getting, day in day out. That takes into account all of the various ups and downs of the market, individual deck condition or seller offering skills, etc.

BTW, your statement that eBay should determine the value still means that $100 is too high. The average over the past few months on ANY 9000-series deck was just over $95, if you only look at the non-Dolby models (which are older and less collected), that average drops to $85.

I don't remember being asked what the highest price anyone ever got for one of these decks is, just the market value. Still $50 to $100 from where I'm sitting, not $100-$150 - though I hope to substantially improve on that when I finally get around to unloading the two I have sitting around.

You have to admit my answer was at least based both on facts AND math... but feel free to continue to disagree with those if you would rather base your answer on other things.

John

Hogwash? Give me a break :D yes I seen what you posted BTW perhaps you need to read my statement again I said $100-$150 you yourself said that it may well bring $100.00 which I agree that a nice looking well running tape deck should bring$100.00 and perhaps just perhaps because Ebay is a funny place where rhyme and reason at times do not fit into the equation it may even go to $150.00 It's not like we are hundreds off our estimates and further more you have no clue as to what this deck may or may not have had done to it nor do I.

The Point here is that we both have opinions as to value and we differ slightly on them but we should be allowed to have them without being beat up for it, and the fact is Ebay and the bidders will ultimately decide what that may be not us :D

REGARDS JIM

Ok, you win. I clearly know nothing about Tandberg equipment, market pricing for same, or how to calculate trailing 6 month average sales. Must be a woman, who else would suffer from all those afflictions? You are too much man for me for sure.

shang, you're on your own here. Per jim, go ahead and list that deck for $150, you'll do fine. Just like the one that closed today after a week, with zero bids on a $100 ask/$140 BIN listing.

I'm out.

John

Hey Shang,

Just in case you think of selling the RTR let me be one of the wishers! Out here in the south east asia the market for vintage audio gear and specifically the RTR is quite deserted. I have been on a look out and not single peice for sale during last few months.

Ebay is ofcourse one of the oprions. But the good players on the ebay are quite expenssive and add to that the shipping ....it's almost like 400 bucks fo a RTR to each here.

Anybody else listening to my pleaa.....I will be greatful....
Let me know if you are keen.

Cheers, Kishor
