Mirage frx-5 any good?

He had a few consoles too, one being a Curtis Mathis with tubes inside... the other was Penncrest solid state. I already have two consoles in here ATM, so there's no room for either one of those. Both worked. He had a better system inside, but wasn't for sale...

FRX-5 are not some crappy speakers!
Far cry from some high end mega bucks, but very good nevertheless.

They were fine.
The FRX series was the monopole line from Mirage when they were still making some very fine products....their higher end speakers at the time were all bi-polar designs (They called it Omnipolar) with drivers radiating in-phase on both the front and back of the cabinet.
The FRX-series only had front-firing drivers, and was more comparable with the Boston Acoustics CR-series gear (mid-priced bookshelf speakers)

They were part of a package deal from yesterday's trip around town. I think I made a very good deal on the whole lot, but that's for discussion in another forum. I was curious as to if they were worth the cost of refoaming the two woofers, since both are torn. I haven't found any specs on them, so I didn't know what I'd be pairing them with. I'm looking for some ideas as to what would be most compatible for them.
I'm not using any surround sound equipment, so more than likely, I'd be using them in a 2-channel set-up for my bedroom. These were paired with the Sansui AU-417, Pioneer CT-F700, Pioneer TX-6500/ll tuner, Sony PS 636 turntable. I don't have the space in my bedroom for all that gear, so I was planning on just pairing with a receiver, and possibly my other Pioneer tape player (CT-F500).
The room is small, 11' x 14'. Space is a premium in there with my California king waterbed. I built a custom pedestal underneath with plenty of drawers, and a custom headboard, so I didn't need either a dresser, or nightstands.
The towers will fit nicely on either side of the waterbed's headboard without interfering with the pedestal's drawers.

I found a PDF parts list for many of the speakers, including the ones I picked up recently. It's categorized by speaker model number and lists parts numbers for everything: speakers, crossovers, grille cloth, cabinets and stands.
I don't know how many Mirage owners there are here, but this PDF might be helpful in the future.

Reviving an old thread as I found very little user feedback/reviews on this speaker. I recently picked up a pair and have been very pleasantly surprised by the sound given it was Mirage's more entry level line.
As with most of the Canadian speakers born of the NRC, they are neutral with detailed highs, clear midrange and surprisingly full bass for a small tower with a small woofer; they sound "big" with a large soundstage. They are pretty efficient and are easily driven by the three receivers I tried them with, a Pioneer VSX-921, a Marantz SR5400, and a Marantz SR8500.
The FRx-5s are good enough that I've decided to use them rather than my PSB Century 300i or NHT SuperOnes in a two-channel system (with the SR8500 and a Mirage LF150 subwoofer) in my bedroom to listen to acoustic, jazz, and vocal music while relaxing in my lounge chair.
At used prices in the sub-$200 range they are a great buy for anyone interested in quality over quantity.
