Mirage M1 tweeters?

Slowly but surely....
I just picked up a pair of Mirage M1's in great condition, except that both front and rear tweeters are out in one of them. I'm hoping something in the path from the x'over to the tweeters is loose, but preparing myself for the worst. Where would I even find replacement tweeters beside waiting on ePrey? Is there a cross reference to tweeters used in other Mirage models? And lastly, does anyone know how to properly get to the tweeters?

Exactly...at $640 for all four tweeters! Well...those tweeters are NLA since the early 2000's, and especially after Klipsch bought Mirage. There is a API dome tweeter for $99 ea. on a Canadian site, but that still comes out to 4 bills...
 
Can you post a photo of the tweeter? I know a few folks up here who might know where they can be found.
 
To buy any new tweeter as good as the M1's your gonna shell out way over a hundred anyway...you get what you pay for.
 
Were talking about a speaker that retailed for 4000 US dollars in 1989 and was voted "the speaker of the decade" by "Absolute Sound magazine". Spending 600 bucks or so on them is not really a big deal. Cheaping out on the tweeters would be like putting Kia Rio wheels on a Corvette.

They are still sitting in my SUV, and I'm looking for help to move them to my place on the 2nd floor! These suckers weigh about 185 lbs each...and will snap some pics once I roll down the socks.
 
No one suggested "cheaping out" on the tweeters. However, there must be better deals out there to be had on the original tweeters than what has been already stated.
 
some working originals might be around but these tweeters suffer from the same problems as the Energy 22 tweeters as they are similar in design. Old original tweeters will become pretty fragile. Might just as well bight the bullet now, the rebuild is essentially a new tweeter except for the frame and magnet
 
The Si series ( M1, M3 and M5 ) all used the same tweeter which is a a very sophisticated and expensive titanium dome. To preserve what the original desinger intended you should get the tweets rebuilt. Failing that, look for used ones.
 
I had a pair of M1's with a tweeter out. I contacted ABI Tech and IIRC they no longer services the tweeters. You will likely need to find replacements. Having said that, I personally think they are well worth restoring, they were one of the most fun speakers I have ever had the pleasure of owning.

Funny I was going to PM you about how you handled them...I read your "SCORE" post when you first got them w/ the Onkyo amp, and subsequently someone else mentioned that you had the same problem. How did you end up handling that bad tweeter? For now, I will just take the rear one from the good cabinet, and move it to the front of the one that's out. I was trying to find out if there's a newer Vifa or Seas that has similar characteristics and replace them for good. Otherwise, the originals may still go out even after rebuilds...

I'll keep you in mind if I ever get to that point. I think what I may do for now is to move the good rear tweeter to the front of the other one. Will miss out on the omnipolar, but at least the fronts will sing. I just need to figure out how to pull down the front sock...
 
You need to remove the top and bottom caps, and the sock will have a wooden dowel running through it that will pop out. Be careful, because these can break if you try to force them. I sent an email to Mirage (ACI IIRC) and they sent me a diagram of how to do it. Reinstalling the sock is trickier.

Thanks Aaron - great info. I just e-mailed Mirage via Klipsch re: documentation.
 
If they don't send it, I think I still have the document around somewhere. Let me know and I can send it to you if needed.
