A guy moving was selling some "assorted stereo items" for $40. In the stash was a Marantz 22xxB (can't tell what model, any guesses?), a Sony silver-face single tape deck, and some sort of equalizer. I emailed the guy, he replies that he sold it less than five minutes ago. &$#@!!!!! I really wanted that Marantz. :tears:

Not from the solid state era barring a small handful of exceptions. I'm not a hater, early SS Marantz just doesn't tickle me the way early Sansui does.

FWIW, that Sony is a fairly good deck which like many flies well under the radar.

Never had the privilege of listening to a Sansui. Aesthetically, they don't "tickle me" as mush as a Marantz. That being said, I saw what I think was a Asian-market-only all-black Sansui that looked pretty sweet on a post here somewhere.

What made that Sony deck special?

Silver lining: I wouldn't get yelled at for bringing home more stereo gear. :D
Gray cloud: It probably needed new caps, alignment, and critter eviction.

The sliders on those Vector Research EQ's can get scratchy. And if you're trying to match it visually to other Vector Research pieces, they changed the paint color to a darker black later on.

Not really "special" per se`, it's just a good 3 head 2 motor solenoid control deck, and it's a Sony. Sony was pretty much a leader in tape machines back in the day.
