Mission 700 woofer replacement

ipsofactory

New Member
Hello speaker fiends.

I just made what I thought was a bargain by getting some original, early 80's Mission 700 speakers for £25 on ebay . After bidding the seller informed me that he had replaced the original woofers with "equal parts" 17 years ago. Equal parts turned out to be Soundlab SP8W woofers.

Can anyone tell me if these are the same or equal to the original Mission woofers or whether I should ask to retract my winning bid?

Many thanks
Dan

For my part, nothing equals original. I'm verrry picky about this, if it's not original, I will pass. There is so many vintage gear outhere, I like it original.

Did I say original ?

Will say it again

After bidding? NOT COOL.

The buyer misled everyone. Unfortunately, you have the "winning bid", so I would let the buyer know that since he/she mis-represented the item, you are not interested anymore and retracting your bid. I would also get a screen shot of the ad, just in case you have to contact e-bay.

if you retract your bid it will just offer it to the next highest. no harm no foul.

No harm, no foul?

Maybe not to ipsofactory, but what about the next person? The seller told ipsofactory AFTER he won that parts have been replaced with "equal parts?", not factory replacements. Who's to say the seller will offer the same information to the next buyer? Maybe the seller will let them go without, and the buyer might never find out why the speakers he just bought don't "sound right". This is one of the reasons I hate E-PREY. Just too much crap going on.

ipsofactory. You should inform e-Bay of what this seller did to you. Maybe they will do something about it, but I doubt it.

Actually the seller added a note to the listing as well as telling me. They were very apologetic about it and said I could obviously retract my bid if I wanted. Seems like they genuinely forgot about it rather than attempted swindle.

Anyway, no-one else had bid on them and I decided to get them anyway as they only cost me £25. They just arrived and are in excellent condition. I haven't tested yet but have read in the comments on the link below that recommended replacement woofers are Monacor SPH 210 so may buy a pair if I'm not happy with the sound.

Watch eBay or eBay UK for a pair of the original woofers. They come up now and again.

Well, I'm glad both you and the seller resolved the problem. Just an honest mistake. Good to hear you're gonna take them anyway. At that price, the parts alone are worth it. Good luck, and I hope they sound good to you. Enjoy.

Interesting, the picture at that site has foam surrounds roll outside rather than inverted like mine. May be during refoam, they didn't find inverted foams and also the surrounds are on top of cone rather than inside. :scratch2:

Mine are inverted surrounds and the cone is outside and foam underneath:

well that makes three different Mission 700 speakers I've seen.

I have a pair that I assume came after the ones in the photos above.

And there is another style from the late 80s, early 90s I assume that look quite different.

My grille doesn't come off, and the drivers are mounted to the baffle from the rear.

I refoamed mine and they have more and deeper bass, and less midrange than the quite good replacements I put in there while refoaming them. The woofer has a low fs, and a stout suspension.

For the designs above like mine, foam surrounds are inverted as I found in few other sites.

One more with inverted surrounds:

As you said, yours is different as the L-pad is very small compared to larger L-pads with a fuse on my pair.

Well welll well! I shouldn't have said they are in excellent condition as I noticed after wiring them in that the rubber surrounds (this bit: http://r.ebay.com/zW7uF8) have come away from the cone a little bit on both speakers.

Annoying. Seller has offered a refund, but I can't face sending them back again. They look in such good condition otherwise I'm thinking of my other options.

My options are:
Buy a pair of these: http://www.bluearan.co.uk/index.php?id=MON100890
Buy the rubber surrounds in the ebay link above and attempt to install them. Not to keen on this idea, being a complete novice means it's unlikely to be a high quality fix.
Or pay a repairman to fix them. Although I'm guessing labour will be expensive for this sort of thing.

I see these go for £100 on ebay easily so I'm thinking if I have paid £25 so far plus the £76 for the new drivers...... Not such a good deal but not a terrible one either.

I'm a bit confused at how yours are laid out Mystery. On mine the foam is on top of the rubber surround as with the ones on the site I linked to previously. Both of ours look like the Monocor SPH-210. On yours the rubber is stuck on top of the foam?

Mine also have the rubber stuck on top of the cone. I'll upload some photos of that and the tear later.

Use Aleen's Tacky Glue to repair the surrounds. Easy fix even if you're not handy. Get some Aleen's in the gap and squeeze together. Release and let sit for 3-5 minutes, then squeeze again to bond together. Let dry overnite, and you're set. Aleen's works well on all types of material, and is great for repairs like yours. Take your time, and the driver will be good as new.

Good Luck

Edit: I would suggest taking out the woofers as to get to the back of the surround/cone when bonding back together.

I took them out to have a look and there is a bit of what looks like battery acid residue. See below. Guessing it's gonna be new woofers all round then!

Thanks for the tip. But the rip is right on the edge where the curved part of the rubber meets the flat part which is glued to the cone. There's nothing to stick back on to. It's pretty much a 1mm edge. Maybe you can see this better in my photo? Still think I can fix it?

So is the acid buildup on the back of the woofer not worth worrying about?

Thanks for all your advice

That's just corrosion, you can get rid of it with a wire brush, brass type preferably as the steel type will leave it's bristles all over the magnet.

More interesting are the rubber surrounds and dust cap. If these are genuine Mission woofers, they should have had inverted foam surrounds and a mesh cap. Can you post a picture of the back of the woofer, with the magnet and whatever label it has?

Don't despair. You have a wonderful sounding pair of speakers once they are up and running. You're in the right location (England) to find spares for these. I see them all the time on eBay UK, if you need to replace the woofers someone will be breaking up a set no doubt. I've also seen surround kits on there.
