Mission 770 Freedom V | Replacement Tweeters

Hi! New forum user here, this seemed like the best place to ask this.


So I have these Mission 770 Freedom V which I've come to appreciate more and more, especially now that I upgraded my amplification. I've bought them years ago in quite bad condition and have since replaced the woofer surrounds, upgraded the crossovers and refinished/repainted them. Now I would like to replace the tweeters since the current ones are quite badly punctured (from previous owner trying to un-pop them out, I guess). The speakers do sound good but they get a little harsh and strained when loud over complex passages, and now I'm thinking this might be from the tweeter punctures.


The tweeters are the horn loaded super elliptical ones, the same (at least visually) that are on the 780 Argonaut mkii). On the back they are labeled Mission type no ZTX II. I read somewhere that the correct tweeter is the Vifa D27TG, that it fit straight onto the waveguide without modification. Currently that tweeter is manufactured by Scanspeak, model D2606/922000. However these tweeters have coated textile diaphragm, whereas the originals are plastic polymer. I'm not sure if this was just how the model was upgraded over the years while maintaining specifications, or if it's something entirely different which would not integrate well into the Freedom Vs without crossover modifications.

The important things are that it fits physically and the impedance which will affect frequency response if it's different, possibly output levels but that can be adjusted by resistors. The material change well who can say without trying it's been a few years.

Aim for polypropylene capacitors and air cored inductors, in the mission crossovers I've seen they fitted an air cored tweeter inductor but the bass inductor was iron cored with plenty of room for improvement.

Thanks! So you're saying it should be ok with these replacements. Interesting suggestion about the inductors. I did upgrade the capacitors to some nice PP Mundorfs years ago but left the inductors stock. I'll check if the bass is indeed iron core (I think it is) and consider an upgrade.
 
Posting an update for those interested. Went ahead with the replacement of the tweeters with Scanspeak D2606/922000.

After removing the faceplate they were virtually identical do the originals, clipping strait into the horns without modification.
The overall sound signature is similar to the originals, keeping the same tonal balance albeit the treble is more refined and linear (the originals had a bit of a peak around 4-6khz). Imaging also improved slightly.

Happy with the repair/upgrade.
