Mitsubishi and MGA.

Rod Beauvex

Look at the tiny bunny...
What's the deal with MGA, in relation to Mitsubishi? Did Mitsubishi have a specific purpouse for the MGA name, or did they just randomly stick this name on stuff?

At least in the early 80's, MGA was a lower-priced line that offered primarily all-in-one, complete systems with some optional components (tape decks, IIRC). Mitsubishi was the brand of higher end, individual components and, later on, receivers. Not sure that was always the case, but it was that way from ~1980 to 1984. Also, IIRC, MGA was a separate and distinct franchise from Mitsubishi; i.e., an authorized MGA dealer was not automatically authorized to sell Mitsubishi. MGA was sold through lots of outlets. Mitsubishi was limited to specialist dealers.

I agree with the above. In addition, and I could be wrong, but my take on it was that the company may have felt that by using a less oriental name they picked up some customer's they wouldn't have normally picked up.

MGA may have been the lower end products. The build quality was poor, but they sound nice.

Not always all in ones. (I know, you said primarily)

I had this. TT was heavy.

Actually, you made me realize that what I wrote was not exactly what I meant. The "all-in-one" reference was intended to refer to a complete system of components, rack and speakers, though what I wrote suggested an everything on one chassis. Thanks for bringing the discrepancy to my attention. Nice looking gear you've got there. Thanks for sharing the pictures. All the MGA systems I saw were black with a cherry/rosewood laminated rack.
