Mitsubishi LT-30

I'm hoping that someone out there has the "overhang" gauge that comes with an LT-30 and would be willing to measure it from collar to stylus and provide that number? I'd appreciate it greatly. I'd read before that it's about 50mm and I've tried that but it seems to be a bit short, as in the stylus is too close to the base of the tonearm. My 52 year old eyes need all the help they can get. Thanks in advance!

I'm using a caliper I got from Amazon. I'll stick with 50mm. As I said these eyes ain't as accurate as they once was. Thank you!

It's damn near impossible to use the radial line method with this TT. With the PL-L1000, it's easy.

Hi Mark! How so? Haven't seen the LT-30 yet, if ever.

Hey Steve,

The LT-30's tonearm can't be moved around manually like the Pioneer's. You'd have to lock the platter in place somehow, and move the tonearm (very slowly) back and forth using the buttons, cueing up and down each time, while the platter motor tried to turn. Being very precise with a 50mm jig is the best approach.

With the Pio, it's simply cue down, power off, then move the tonearm around by hand over the radial line.

Shoulda thunk'a that, obvious now that you describe it.
Can you cue it down and holding the arm, cut power and place the line card on the TT, check, power on holding the arm, repeat in different location? GeeeZ, the 50mm-&-forget-it procedure is so much simpler. Even the Harman Kardon RABCO ST-5/8 are simpler than that but it's jig makes setting higth spacing easier than not.

The best I've been able to do is...using the controls...lift the tonearm, cue it over the record near the spindle, hold it up manually and then power it down. That's how I've set the vtf using an outboard gauge also.

Yes, but the platter is going to try to turn when the power comes back on. Also the arm moves SLOWLY and it would take forever using this procedure. Now if you unhooked the tonearm cable, you could do it just like the Pioneer. Not worth it IMO.

I found that I can use my digital scale (barely) when the arm is on the rest. It's a good thing because the counterweight dial seems pretty inaccurate.

It's all worth it when you hear this table, though:yes:

The LT-30 has a platter motor switch, unlike the LT-20, which would be a real bitch to set up without the jig.

I'm wondering if the LT-30 has the same problem as the LT-20 when playing slightly eccentric records: A nasty little bass thump that in combination with the undamped arm and headshell vibrates at the horizontal resonance frequency (which is different from the vertical resonance frequency on these arms) and about 6 of its harmonics. It seems to be unfixable, though plasti-tak in the headshell and in a ring around the arm lessens it somewhat. It's the reason I'm retiring it and going to an H/K ST-7. My pre-amp's rumble filter kills the fundamental vibration but those harmonics can't be filtered out without trashing the bass. I think a cart with compliance of 10 or less might help, too.

Because it was there. The price was right, it supposedly tracks well but has a speed selector problem. Because I love tangential tracking and will probably never own another radial arm. Because a PX-2 costs too much. Because I'm half-crazy like most of the people in this forum. And it has an AT15SE with a nude Shibata stylus thrown in for free.

I assume the bass thump you're hearing is the arm drive motor kicking in at high speed to track the out-of-round record. Technics LTs do that, but I've never heard a peep out of the LT-30.

I'm sure that's what it is. I wonder if I could mod the circuit with some caps to change the time constant of the tracking motor? Make it stop and start slower.

Did you try a longhorn-modified cartridge?
