From my experience with 12AX7's the old Mullards tend to sound darker Telefunkens and Bugle Boys toward the brighter side. It's surprising how much they can affect the sound of your amp. I sell Mullards to buy the Telefunken and BB. As far 6BQ5's I've yet to find a better tube than the smokey hole Mullards. They are truly amazing.
I came into possession (free) of about 30+ Bugle Boy 12ax7, Au7 and at7 tubes years ago before I knew about tube rolling. Once I had a preamp that used 12ax7 I spent many hours first matching the tubes by their production numbers (symbols) as best I could. Then I started tube rolling. I found some major sound differences even between the BB Ax7’s. And a few that glowed really red and came with their own fireworks show in a bottle.I settled on a handful that sound wonderful. I Even subbed the AU7 and AT7 was a fun and worthwhile exercise. I have not rolled in a while I might have to spend some time doing that again but now I want to tube roll my amp with the 6550, but that costs a bit more.
