MM or MC

Sorry for the rookie question but here goes.

How can I tell if I have a MM or MC cartridge? I have a Shure M95HE cart on my Marantz 6300 TT.

The reason I ask is my Marantz 3250B has a setting for MM, MM/MC and MC.
Which do I use?

Thanks,
Rocko

To address your question of how to tell which one, it's usually a matter of knowing by the model number or looking up the specs. In the event you didn't have that information you could just try the MM inputs to see how well they work. If they're a long way from being loud enough, you would be able to surmise that you may need to try the MC inputs.

Most carts are MM. Unless you find a super nice, audiophile type turntable, I'd expect it to be outfitted with a MM cart.

MC carts are very expensive and most folks don't even know they exist. They have lower outputs and in many cases require special circuits or step up transformers to be used with standard phono stages although there is a group of HOMC, high output moving coil carts that can be used with a traditional MM phono stage.

The standard Shure 95 is very good IMO & is normally 95ED (elliptical diamond)
whereas the HE means Hyper Elliptical & should be even better than the ED

Replacement styli ED & HE from Jico are supposed to be good

I have never seen a MC with a replaceable stylus. On the other hand I have never seen a MM that did not have a replaceable stylus.

The Clearaudio MMs (Maestro, Virtuoso, etc) are all fixed stylus types. I think that actually gives them some better specs in terms of channel separation, distortion, tracking ability, etc. With a removable stylus, there is always that big chunk of plastic; another interface that can add problems.

They were made but I don't know of any current models with replaceable stylus

AT made at least one version [edit - ie AT30 & 31E] & another Manuf was Satin (no longer in production)

edit IIRC some technics too
