Mo/Fi Dylan

Anybody invested in the lastest Dylan reissues? I've got five or six MoFi vinyls (not Dylan) and I think they're aces. I've got one MoFi sacd (Billy Joel, Piano Man) & I think it sucks.

A year ago, Acoustic Sounds hyped pre-orders on vinyl "Blood ... Tracks." I ponied up the $30 and waited 'til June before I asked for a refund. About two months ago Blood was issued on sacd. Just exchanged emails w/MoFi re vinyl release, the're waiting for approval from Dylan-- maybe May or June.

Interested if anybody bought the vinyl (or sacd) Blond on Blond or any of the other new Dylans.

My concern is with the one MoFi sacd I own; it's almost unlistenable. Sorry your thread got off track. Several of the new MoFi Dylan's are now out on sacd and 45 vinyl. Maybe somebody has bought 'em.

As to the post-60's stuff, different strokes.
 
Don't feel to bad about the thread going off track. It helped get a known troll booted.:D

As for what Mofi is putting out now, I think I'll wait for some comparisons. It's not really in my budget to be dropping $30 on an SACD to compare to another SACD that I already own. If they do Time Out Of Mind or the 90s acoustic albums I could see myself jumping on them.
 
I've got Bringing It All Back Home. My guess is that it's level of quality is more of a direct relation to the Master Tapes than the current MOFI pressing process. I don't remember any of those early 60's "Dylan's" being anything too special, sonic-wise. I figure what I've got in "Bringing" is as good of a copy I'm ever going to find.

When Blood On The Tracks comes out, I expect that to be amazing (I hope).
 
I've got an early issue Blood on the Tracks, but it's a little scratchy & sounds a little muddy. I've got some '60's MoFi jazz vinyl that sounds stunning.
 
My girlfriend bought me the MoFi Blood On The Tracks for Christmas, unaware it was a preorder. Last date I heard was April 2x-something. I'm excited to hear that one though

I have The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan on MFSL SACD and I think it sounds pretty good.

I have 15 odd MFSL SACD's ranging from rock to jazz (including several Billy Joel albums) and, imo, the sound isn't so much better from other editions as different. I generally prefer first cd pressings over any other versions, gold/sacd/dvd a or not (and I have over 130 gold cd's from all the makers).

But it's nice to have a slightly different sounding version of many favorites at times so that's why I buy them I suppose. I wouldn't say, however, that any gold versions are ever a "must have", and I would even say that gold cd/sacd's are often over rated and sometimes they do mess up the mastering to the point of where the sound is not just different but worse.

I think maybe the stevehoffman forums might help you find more info. on any particular release as they debate this stuff endlessly.

Like you and other AK folks, I visit Steve's fine forum. There are some cats there whose opinions are gospel (RaunchandRoll and Cassius, for example). However, there often develops a groupthink consensus on certain items that I don't hear myself. One such opinion is that the old Dylan SACDs are bright and brittle. I simply do not hear that.

I don't hear it either. I haven't compared all of them to the first press CDs, but the ones that I have the SACD comes out on top, IMO.
The only one that I would call bright is JW Harding. But that's in the recording. I've read that the original CD is one of the ones that is better than the remaster. I haven't heard myself, though.

Was your album the mofi sacd (which has now been released), or did you get the pre-order vinyl? If you got the sacd, I'm interested to know your reaction.

BTW, MoFi, won't take preorders and they don't list the Blood vinyl on their site; Acoustic Sounds lists the preorders. Just noticed that Blood on the Tracks is scheduled to be issued, if and when, on 180 g/33 rpm, whereas most of the other mofi's are 45 rpm. Just noticed that Blond on Blond, which I thought had been issued, is pre-order at $99 (45/180g); though that was a double album.

I'm really having to decide whether to go for the sacd on Blood on the Tracks, and I'm thinking I'll just wait for the vinyl.

Are these the mofi sacds, or earlier ones?
 
Soundstage should (will) have the MOFI LP's, too. They offer an AK discount, you know.
 
I've got Lp copies of Freewheelin' and Basement Tapes both are fantastic in my book. I've ordered Another Side and should have it by the weekend.

Been waiting since Sep for Blonde on Blonde and Oct for Blood on the Tracks.

I actually rarely visit there myself and I know that the whole forum could be labeled as some sort of "sound police" effort where anything not deemed of sufficient SQ by the self appointed sound quality gurus there is "outlawed" by the members and only for fools who don't have "golden" ears.

But I also think the forum's opinions and consensus are something to consider, at least with a skeptical stance. It can be of help to those who aren't, unlike me, willing to order any new gold edition cd a priori (without any knowledge of its purported SQ) simply to try it (and usually keep it)!

However, being well aware of the expectation effect, I always make sure to listen and compare gold cds to my original pressings and make up my mind on them before I even think of looking up reviews of the SQ on forums like the SH one. Most of the time I only check up on the ones that I don't think sounded as good as they should (or even much worse than the original cd pressings) and usually my views cohere with that of the forum.

So that and other forums which discuss such matters can be helpful if never taken as some ultimate infallible authority imo.
