Modern version of a Magnavox 8802 amplifier.

I have most all the parts.....including a nice sized black enameled chassis.....to do a modern version of a Magnavox 8802 (6V6 PP) amplifier.
What I need to do though, is to find a power transformer and two output transformers.
I'd like to get modern replacements, that are beefier than the original Magnavox transformers.
If anyone could come up with some advice/suggestions on WHAT transformers to get, and WHERE to get them.....that would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

BTW: Would I better better off using a solid state rectifier, or keep the original 6ac4 tube rectifier circuit?

Check out Edcor - they've got great transformers that can't be beat for the price.

Heyboer gets good press around here for quality products at a good price.

If you've got cash to burn, pick up some outputs from Electra-Print. Very nice. :yes:

All three of the above options are Made in the USA! :thmbsp:

Oh, and stick with the tube rectification.

But I do not know the specs....so I'm not sure of what models of Edcor power and output transformers to get?

Isn't that over the max. plate voltage of a 6V6GT tube?

This would be a good one. The original AMP175 transformer (big brother of the 8802) had a 290-0-290... and that resulted in voltages not even close to what a 6V6 can handle. 300-0-300 (in the unit Mark mentions) is about right, with a 5U4 (gives right at 320v on the B+... once you drop around 25v in the cathode bias resistor, that's right at 295v on the plate and screen, which will work just fine). Plus, if you decided to experiment, you could drop some 6L6s in there with a 5AR4 rectifier... it should work (360V B+)... if you used the larger of the two output transformers that Mark mentioned above (the CXPP25), the amp should work quite well with either 6L6s or 6V6s...

BTW: A lot of us seem to be suggesting the 5U4 rectifier. IMHO, that's a good idea... that's one thing that the AMP175 had over the 8802- much better rectifier. And since all the Edcor PTs mentioned have 5v heater windings for rectifier tubes... there's no reason not to 'upgrade' to the bigger rectifier. Plus, there's all sorts of other octal-socket rectifiers that can be experimented with... the aforementioned 5AR4 being one. You won't be stuck paying (IMHO) high prices (for what it is) for the 6CA4, either...

Hahahahahahah..........................

If there is ONE tube at home that I have a million of.....it's 6CA4 rectifier tubes!!
Every single tube amp I have at home uses that 6CA4 tube (or SS) for rectification.
Still, I have extra Octal sockets at home, so it shouldn't be a problem rewiring for the 5U4 rectifier tube.
Will I have to change any resistor or cap values to support the 5U4 rectifier tube?

Just so I don't forget.....again, I want to thank EVERYONE who has contributed posts, I REALLY APPRECIATE it.....a lot!!

The other parts stay the same . It saves one 6CA4 for amp that needs it .I have ten 5u4's for every one 6CA4 .

Could I use a 5U4GB rectifier tube instead of a 5U4 tube?
I have ready access to a NOS GE 5U4GB.

I've thought about doing this very thing with edcor iron! I was thinking about making a pair of stereo amps for home theater use, or a single 3 channel amp and a two channel amp. Would look really cool, and these amps have excellent dynamics for movies, even without a sub at moderate volumes.

Well, at $20 a pop, the price is certainly right.
Just wondering, how much of an improvement these would be, over the stock Maggie OPT's?
They are a bit larger, and in the world of transformers, bigger usually means better?
